VTEC Patent Running Out?
Seeing the "End of VTEC" forum reminded me of two things I heard from a very reliable source.
1st is the VTEC patent, and how it expires in 2 years. Out of curiosity, is this true?
This guy (who is a chief saftey engineer at GM, and my school's Autos teacher) also told my buddy that Honda buys Mercedes-Benz's rights to their suspensions, and that Honda suspensions are nothing more than Honda remakes of MB designed suspensions.
Anyone have any knowledge about these things? Just curious.
Thanks

oh and i just did some research and found that Toyota used the expired patent in (1998?, something like that ) to develop vvt-i, and others found their own variable valve timings.

all the automakers have their own form of variable valve timming, and the outdated VTEC is not needed by others. toyota had its more high tech version of vtec in the late 90's with vvt-i since it was continuous variable timming versus the on-off VTEC and then toyota came out with VVTL-i followed shortly by Honda's i-VTEC. of course mazda and pretty much all the automakers have their own respective versions. the new BMW's V8's have variable lift as well as opposed to the 2-3 cams that i-vtec and vvtl-i have or

I would concur with the above statments, even if the patent runs out you arent going to see a chevy VTEC..
Although plenty of manfuactures have alrleady ripped off the name
GM has their ECOTEC engine
Ford has ecotec
I have seen an e-tech in a hyaundai
