Tying stuff to the roof?

Bought a desk from Ikea the other day but one piece is too wide to fit in the pass through of the trunk and delivery cost $10 less than the actual item itself. I don't know anyone well enough who has an suv/pickup/van who can move it for me so my only option is to try to tie it to the roof.

Anyone done this before? it will basicly be a flat board (in original packaging) on the ikea "roof rack" which is simply 2 triangled shaped tube of cardboard. If the piece was really expensive I would be more willing to have them deliver it but to spend $59 on delivery of a $69 item is just wrong to me.

you can consider taking out the packaging and putting the pieces in one by one. Just throwing out thoughts. I think tying the stuff to the roof should be last resort.

Word of advise.....DON'T REST ANYTHING ON YOUR TSX!!!! Don't even rest your pop on the car. The sheetmetal on this car is soo damn thin even that would probably dent it. There are threads on here of guys closing their trunk with their knuckles instead of a flat hand and it has left an impression on the trunk. Not worth the damage.

I you can't take it out of the packaging and put it in the trunk. I would put down some sort of pad or blanket on the roof first. I've done this with my old Honda Accord when Gome hunting in Japan. My car would be so packed I would literally be leaning forward in my seat. Open your windows and run a rope over your item and through the windows to secure. Be careful not to rub the rope on the edges of the roof. Make sure the rope is on the padding. Thicker the padding the better. Also make sure the item will not slide forward or backward. Sometimes I would have to run a rope to the front and rear bumpers, but that would be hard to do with an Acura. Good luck.

This WILL destroy your roof paint.

If you plan on doing this sort of thing more than once, or ever carrying a bike or kayak, I suggest investing in a universal roof rack. You can attach and detach it, tie things to it, and save your roof.

If you can find a cheap rental, do that instead. Doesn't Home Depot let you rent a truck by the hour? Not sure if you have to buy something from the store in order to use the truck, but it might be worth looking into.

rent a u-haul vehicle. I think the smallest truck here costs $20/day (+ mileage?), so maybe a pick-up truck would be cheaper?

Would it be possible to fit in the back seat? I've had to move stuff that were impossible to do in a coupe, so I had to go find a sedan

Hmm, maybe I can get one of those van taxis and have them move it for me. Have my wife play the damsel in distress and I can follow in the car keeping it safe and sound.

ya a van taxi might be your best bet, or U-Haul too... the van taxi might get pricey depending on how far your thinking of taking it...

but do you really not know anyone at all that knows someone who has a van/suv/pickup/station wagon that could move it for you? ask your friends if they know someone, and throw the owner 10 or 20 bucks, or a 12 pack of beers for helping you out...

how big is ur table? I bought probably one of the largest table boards from ikea a year ago...i think it was like 56x44 or 63x 30someth8inhg? I forget...but i was able to fit that into a civic...

Did you try to put it in on an angle? you get a an extra feet or two of space coming in from the top part of the trunk on one side and the back part of the trunk on the other.

If not, also try loading into back through the doors and go vertical. I believe thats longer than the trunks width.

you're probably pressed for time, but in the future you might want to do a search here for hitches. You can then use your hitch since you don't know anyone with a big vehicle...

Maybe look down your street and see which neighbor has a truck...then they'd have to help you to be neighborly ;-)

I went to a music festival in WV........, over the summer (ALLGOOD... for anyone whos familiar) with a car load of people with no where to put 3 days worth of stuff..... so I tied on one of those travel bags (specifically made for the top of cars) to the top of my 6spd. NHBP TSX. It had alot of clothes and random stuff in it. It was really heavy though (took two people to pick up). The roof and my engine held up wonderfully with all of the weight...., I just made sure that what ever I put on my roof was soft (like clothes).

I agree that it wasnt probably the best idea........, but I had to (girlfriends car broke down right before we left)

I wouldnt put anything tooo heavy or hard on the car......, everyone is right....., the sheet metal is extremely thin...... good luck................

Yeah definitely rent a uhaul or something.

Or if you have have a Lowe's or Home Depot in your area then they rent out their trucks for $20.

Also, is this desk really worth all of this trouble? It better be one damn nice desk for all of this hassle. LOL

The desk is 80cm wide, the pass through of the tsx is far narrower than that and it doesn't help that it tapers so much at the bottom. I think my old civic coupe had a larger (wider) pass through than the TSX.

I'll see how much a cab and a rental will cost and go from there. Thanks for the help everyone.

Are you serious? It is plain stupid & dumb to even consider tying it to your roof. Buy another desk on-line from elsewhere and have it delivered.
