TSX trade-in value
TSX trade-in value
Im looking in KBB for the trade-in value on my TSX:
2006,Auto, Navi, 4,000 miles, Excellent Cond(actually in prestine cond).
Addition-Oem underbody kit , which I know they dont care and will give me a fat $0.
Kbb list it at $26,400 . Now is this correct? I mean brand new right now is about $28k , which is only $2k difference. I gave the dealer a copy of the KBB trade-in value and they say KBB is whack and the car is worth only $23,500
. I know I can do better with private sell but just dont want to go through the hassle.
I would like to get some input before I go to the next dealer before they end up calling "ME" whack!

First off, dealership's don't care what you want for it or what any value book says. From what I've seen they like to use the NADA book which tends to run lower than KBB. Bottom line, they want to give you the lowest dollar for your car so they can in turn, sell it for profit.
Secondly, I don't know if you have heard but amongst sedan's, the TSX is #1 for resale value. So, with that in mind, you might have some bargaining power depending on what you're after for a new car.
I don't know if that helps or not but in the end, take what you think is fair for the trade-in value.

You should try negotiating a bit, I think you can get close to what kbb said, but since you are probably dealing with non Acura it will be tough to get full kbb value. When I was trading in my previous Acura with Acura dealership I got paid 1k more over what kbb said.

I try to negotiate a bit but the salesguy seems to be unwilling to make any sale. I mean he could've went back and give me another $500 bump atleast, but I guess he was not motivated enough. Its the end of month/year and this guy dont seems to give a rats ass!
But hey, i was prepared for this for bringing an Acura to a Lexus dealer. Off to a different dealer tomorrow.

$23.5 is actually a good price. A car like yours will bring anywhere between $23.1 and $24 on the block. Remember, a dealer is there to make money. They're not doing it for shits and giggles.
If they are giving you $23.5 on the trade, chances are they are going to sell it directly to their wholesaler who is going to run it at auction. If they intend to keep it, they would have given you less.
KBB and Edmunds are consumer sites that get you motivated to do a buy or sell. Their listed values are optimistic which cross promotes their advertisers. There are links all over their sites to "find the car".
If you think that you can sell your car privately for the KBB value, I wish you luck. Be prepared to sit on the car for a long time. Think about it, if you were the consumer looking for a TSX and had the option of buying from a private owner or brand new from a dealer and the price difference wasn't vastly different, what would you do? Remember new car finance rates are better than used car finance rates. Also, the majority of new cars on the road are leased.
I work for a wholesaler and believe me, you are getting a fair price on the trade.

$23,500 is ok huh? well, I guess this is what i have to sacrafice for getting a new car. lol, I only made 3 payments on this TSX and I lost about $6,000. Half of me is telling me to keep this car.

$23,500 isn't that bad if you factor in the sales tax you would save when purchasing a new car. If you don't get at least $25,500 for private sale, the trade-in would be your best bet since you don't want to go through any hassle.

Recently I saw a honda dealership trying to sell a TSX for 25K with 20k miles on it. It was an 04 with 6spd and navi. While it was a nice color and a beautiful car I just thought that little reduction for a used car? At that point why not just buy new? Although I guess its hard to find 6spd navis though.

i was curious and went to kbb.com and wanted to check in my trade in value for my 04 TSX 5AT/navi with 45K miles. i only put good because it says most vehicles fall in this category.
so i got about $17,000 for a trade in value. not bad, but wish it was at least $19,000.
then just for a joke i put my car again this time in with both 100,000 miles and then 200,000 miles both in just good condition, not excellent.
surprisingly, for 100,000 miles the car is worth $12,000 and then at 200,000 miles the car is worth $11,000. that's pretty good.

I'd say that is about right for a used 06. i bought my 06 5AT non navi in Feb (like the so cal guy) but i got mine for only $24,890 OTD. If i traded it in and they offered me $23,500 i would probably take that in a min. I have been thinking about it due to the lack of power as well but its a fun car and i have a lot of finacial obligations so i'm not (unless the new 09 TSX is turbo'd and SWEET!)
I have an 04 AT w/o navi and I love the car and don't plan to sell for years. But I do watch the ads to see how they are valued. TSX is not real popular in Indiana so you don't see many on the road and you don't see many used ones for sale. A recent newspaper ad from a dealer had an 04 listed at nearly $27k. Now that is ridiculous! I suppose they have listed it that high thinking any buyer will only offer several thousand less anyway. But it demonstrates that when it comes to selling and buying used cars every person's opinion is as good as the next guy's and nobody's opinion is worth beans until the money changes hands. So... go with what you believe is right (but be prepared to be disappointed, whichever side of the deal you are standing.)

SELL PRIVATELY, ITS NOT THAT MUCH OF A HASSLE, the couple more hundred or thousand dollars you'll make will make it worth that extra hassle, i promise

Its always better to trade in with the dealer that you are purchasing the vehicle from as they give you a tax break on your next purchase. That could be a HUGE incentive. The best thing to do is shop your vehicle around and see if your dealer is willing to or come close to matching your best offer.

OK 1st off. Go to a few different dealerships. You need to play that game with them, you need to make them think they need to EARN your business not that they already have it and can toy with you. Go get another quote from 2 or 3 other dealers, including trade in value. Go to carmax, get it appraised... you probably wont sell it to them but its nice to know what they think and how far off the dealerships are from it. If carmax is higher, then use that to your advantage and if they won't budge, say you'll just go sell it to carmax. Usually they dont want to hear that because there is money to be made off used cars just as there is on new cars.... they like making money so they most likely come up. If you live in or around an affluent area (like I do), go as far away from it as you can. The dealerships tend to be snooty and give you SHIT for your trades in these areas because all the rich suburban soccer moms walk in with their husbands (or in some cases their own) check book and don't give a flying shit how much the trade in is worth.
Check the values on KBB, NADA Guide and Edmunds... and get a good idea of what you should be able to expect as a trade in price. Every used car salesman will tell you they dont go by those because they are unrelyable. My dad was a sales manager in the business for 10 years and let me tell you, everytime there was a trade, he went right to all 3 of those sites and made a decision from there.
Also If your car is in amazing shape, add on like $500 and let them know you expect a little more because they don't have to recondition the car and that will save them time and money.
Selling your car to a dealership is a fuckin hassle... trust me i know. Im 25 and my TSX is the 9th car I've owned. When I traded in my RSX -S and Jeep Grand Cherokee, I got hassled by them about the trade prices I wanted and ended up trading them for less than I should have. I looked on the dealers website and saw my RSX-S selling for $20,999 and I only got $15,500 for it as a trade... Thats a hell of a profit, and it was sold within 5-6 days of being on the lot.
Basically, I would say put your car up on craigslist for shits and giggles... maybe someone will really want it and you'll gain an extra 2g's. If not, just try a few dealerships, youre bound to go to one that wont fuck you over as much as the rest... I say that cuz EVERY dealership will fuck you over a little bit if they can.
You can also save a little money by making sure they drop the sticker of the new car due to the fact that they won't budge on the trade in. Thats where edmunds comes in real handy. You'll see invoice price and sticker.... let them make their money but $2500 is a little high, they'll drop down to $1000 profit and that'll save you a bunch. If they say they can't sell it low, ask them what their invoice for the car is and you want to see it. If they won't, tell them you don't want to deal with them if they have something to hide.
Remember YOU are the customer, you pay their salary and they should be catering to you, not you to them and a fair deal on a trade isnt out of the question.
Plus were talking about an Acura here... My dad traded in a 1 yr old TL auto with 14k miles for a brand new TL 6mt for $2900! These things hold their value so you SHOULD be able to get a good trade in price.

Disagree with the not being able to sell it privately. 23.5 for an 06 Nav is a stupid low price for private party and probably would be gone in a week or two.
I wouldnt take less than 25 grand for it if I was selling it outright. Acura dealer gave me 22,500 trade-in after kicking their ass a little bit on an 05 5AT non-nav that was about 12 months/8k miles old. I would say at least 24k trade or forget it.
