Thumbs up TSX tied for #2 spot for upscale small cars

Last week, I saw an article in U.S. News & World Report about the best cars in certain categories. I can't find the complete article online (the adapted article is at http://usnews.rankingsandreviews.com...s-and-reviews/)

Anyway, since I'm used to the TSX winning so many awards, I knew our car would be somewhere on the list. Under the upscale small car category, the TSX tied for the #2 spot with the Volkswagen GTI (http://usnews.rankingsandreviews.com...le-Small-Cars/).

If only they would have given the TSX a higher exterior score...the TSX is the one that definitely makes me drool, and I have one already =P

I didn't know that Volkswagen is considered upscale. I've always look at it as an economy European car.

Well, compared to almost all of their competition in their price range they have better interior quality, fit 'n finish, design, materials, etc - a lot of them very close to their sister company Audi (yet thousands less). The four-door GTI is basically an A3... and Car and Driver even called the new TT a more stylish and expensive 2-door VW GTI. Almost all of the internal parts share roots (and logos!).

My fiancé has a '06 Jetta and the overall quality of materials and fit'n finish in it is at least on par if not better than the TSX. All of the interior lighting and small details are just better executed on the VW, something all German cars are better at than just about any American or Japanese brand.

I test drove a GTI and was seriously considering getting one if i could have found an 07 with the attractive lease rate. But all I could find were 08's. I will admit the car was badass. The interior was really nice, and it was a blast to drive. But the GTI and TSX were the same price a month $352 so I took the more mature TSX.

I think you hit the nail on the head there. The GTI is high quality, fast, and a sweet car but the TSX gets the nod for a more-mature driver/luxury.

Perhaps a different word than "quality" ought to be used to describe the GTI in comparison, as the first thing that pops into my mind is: how can it be described as quality when it's reliability is poor in comparison?

I'm a little disappointed they did not rate the TSX interior a little higher.

I’ve always felt the TSX interior (and other Acura vehicles) were always well designed and had an excellent look and feel. The critics describe the TSX as “An Accord in a Sunday Suit”. I figured all the standard features would put it over the top (MID, Bluetooth, sport steering wheel, SS mode, voice commands, memory seats, top rated touch screen navi, XM).

I don’t think the critics spent any extended time with the TSX. I took me about 30 days to really understand and appreciate luxury/tech/sport aspects of the TSX over my Accord.

You meant to say...the TSX is based off the same platform as a european honda accord. I don't think the european honda accord has all the stuff that a TSX has. But if i'm wrong and they're exactly the same vehicle, then I stand corrected. I do believe the engine and interior is slightly different...
