Hey all.

I am thinking about getting my wife a TSX in a month or two. Right now she has an 03 Protege that he been a great car. It gets about 28 - 31 MPG and has not has one problem. She wants to keep it, but to me it is to small and it feels not all that safe.

So when I had my CL, they gave me a TSX for a week and I was fairly impressed. Even for the 4 cly, it ran pretty good, much better then her car now.

So I was wondering what gas mileage the TSX is getting? Anyone know of any deals that are available or become available on the TSX at the end of the year?

Or, does anyone have any suggestions on a nice car around 25,000?

I also thought about picking up an off-lease BMW or Audi. Any thoughts??

I average just over 30mpg on the highway and around 25-26 with more in-town driving.

i average 21 miles per gallon city and hwy combined, but then I have a lead foot.. and live in los angeles,. traf and temperature dont help

I average about 26-28.5 mpg with mixed driving, and 30+ mpg with just highway driving. Thank goodness I got the TSX and didn't buy an SUV with our astronomical gas price these days.... mind you, it's still cheaper than Europe, isn't it?

I had put more than 10,000 miles on my TSX over slightly less than 1 year of time, and calculated the colletected data over the past year. I drive quite conservely, and was expecting better number. I tried to kept my tires pressure according to the manual (32/30 psi), and I am gonna increase their pressure a tap more than the suggested value from now. Below is my calculated fuel efficiency of the car, probably 70/30 highway/local driving, with 92 gasolin --

average gas mileage with first standard deviation: 27.3 +/- 3.2 miles per gallon
minmum gas mileage : 18.4 miles per gallon
maximum gas mileage: 32.4 miles per gallon
Total gas consumed: 366 gallons

My first full tank after the Hondata reflash. 26.3mpg with roughly 50/50 city/hwy. I'm liking it.

CITY driving expect about 25...

highway...this will sound crazy...but the faster you go the better MPG you actually get!!! avg 70mph get about 30mpg.....go 80-85mph and I have gotten near 35mpg.
(cruise set and no changing of speeds of course)

seems right, did u shut the a/c off when u were doing 80? 70 mph at 31 to 32 mpg with the ac with a load of 2 passengers and stuff is average....

I agree with sauceman...WTF.

How do you get better mileage at that much of a higher speed? So many factors, so many factors to consider. I'll give you this though....the mileage change is pretty tight in cold conditions for me anyways between 65mph and 75mph but certainly not better mileage at the higher speed.

I get about 26mpg in 0 celcius temps. in the 100% city driving and about 32 mpg in the same temperatures at highway at about 70mph with the 5AT. I've only had the car for 3 months so I would expect these stats to improve over time.

The person who posted having a better MPG at 80+ mph probably got the numbers from the Navi-screen. If he did the calculation himself based on distance and gasoline consumed, 70 mph should yield a better number than 80 mph.

I've got about 1,500 miles on my '06 TSX w/ Navi (5AT - GBM/Ebony), and I'm impressed with the mileage I've gotten on recent extended trips.

According to the MID screen, I got 34.4 miles per gallon going from western NC to above Richmond, VA (all interstate driving, ~73 MPH, A/C off, 93 octane). I checked this with the "first click off" method at the gas pump, and I manually calculated 33.9 miles per gallon. I was very satisfied with this.

Guess what? It's true, at least in my experience.
I drive a 100plus mile commute (RT) with other occasional mixed driving, and average around 26-28 mpg in so doing. Consistently. The commute speeds are typically from 80 to 85 mph, with some "variation" both high and low.

I went on a little side trip with a friend who was driving his G35 sedan, about 20 mi of in-town, then 60-70 mi of Interstate, followed by 45 mi or so of two-lane, mostly empty road. After clearing the city area, we probably averaged 90 for the remainder, and enjoyed the trip immensely. Upon return to town over the same route, and a day or so of this 'n that driving, I was amazed to see 30 mpg.

Since I have no Navi-screen, and always calc my numbers personally (my butler refuses and the maid can't ... you know about finding help these days), I am fairly sure of the results. I also am of the opinion that one-two-three passengers doesn't make a whole lot of difference under typical driving conditions as opposed to carefully monitored test conditions (where it would indeed). Traffic situations are constantly in flux, which make it difficult to keep a steady-state condition in effect, constraining attempts at repeatable results. Or dog dander.

So, in summation, I believe it is very conceivable that this particular beast performs best at elevated speeds. Oh dear! What shall we do, Margaret?

And, for those of you inclined to pontificate on speeding, you ain't me, you don't live where I do, and remember the famous words of Mr. Bender regarding his shiny metal arse.

Speeding? Who said speeding? It's just "variation", on the high side, of the typical speed. That's my story, officer, and I'm sticking to it.

My is that, while the TSX is capable of attaining wonderful fuel economy at elevated speeds, all other things being equal the mileage will be better at 70mph than at 80mph. At those speeds wind resistance dominates.

It should dominate, however, the fluid dynamics equations and solutions are a set of coupled partial differential equations. You get really nasty results with them (nothing is the same twice, ever, since in phase space the equations might be trapped in a "strange attractor" where you have an infinite set of solutions confined to a finite space).

However, if you take the the average of a whole bunch of runs, the one at the higher speed should give you lower fuel economy, up to a critical point. There is a point at which the changeover from land speed to air resistance domination happens, but due to the complex nature of the way air moves, this point is going to be fluctuating up and down all the time.

no, i believe the gas mileage has something to do with 1.21 jiga watts, nat 100000 gigawatts..jees.

also has to do with how the moon and the stars align on any given day.

i just passed the 1000 mile mark on my 2006 tsx and i've been averaging 27.5 according to the MID. i keep forgetting to calculate it myself!

Why am I only getting 17.2mpg in los angeles, is it because I have not put on more than 1000 miles on a new car.

ehhh..you live in PA...its pretty hilly here so with my AT, i dont get much . Only about 17-18 mpg in the city and around 27-28 on the hwy

oh the 405...I once spent 3 hours on there trying to get from Santa Monica to Torrance...what a nightmare...

Anyway, here's shot of my MID. I just got the best gas mileage I have seen in the car during city driving. Keep in mind that this is nearly "city" driving, with a little bit of traffic thrown in for good measure, that I was doing so it just goes to show that with some diligence, you can eek out amazing gas mileage numbers.

Thanks to sauceman for the driving tips thread which helped to achieve this.

all i know is in Norther Virginia/DC, traffic is horrendous, i have about 430 miles on my TSX and my avg is 18mpg and that is with taking as much care of keeping that instant mpg meter about 20. and this is only 14 miles a day. All im saying is that it is very difficult to attain decent gas mileage in stop and go traffic

The mileage that i get is actually pretty good. On a trip in the summertime one time i got 35 MPG avg. In the summer with a mix of city and highway with a spirited drive once in a while, i usually avg 30mpg. But with winter formula fuel and the cold winter, i get like 25-28mpg. Hope this helps.

All in all, i think compared to the performance that the TSX gets, the gas mileage is excellent. I think it's one of the strongest components of this car.
