TSX based on Civic Platform??
Hey guys (and gals),
New to this site - just picked up an 06 Carbon Grey AT TSX with Navi. Love the car!! Was telling a friend (who is fairly knowledgabe about cars) about it - and he said it is based on the Civic platform while the TL is based on the Accord platform. I was under the impression that the TSX was based on the Accord. What's the truth?

TSX is based on Accord platforms since the 90's. It has been revised significantly though. North American Accord is stretched version of the TSX which is the 'World Accord'. TL is also based on this similar platform but is stretched like the North American Accord. Civic goes with the CSX. All other Honda products in North America are pretty much the same platform - i.e CRV, Odyssey, MDX, Pilot...I'm not sure amount the Ridgeline. This is why they call Honda's manufacturing very flexible....they can build a TSX in Allison, Ontario (where they build on the truck platform) with very few alterations to the production system (well so much as they have the parts)
Your friend must drive a VW - most VW drivers don't understand what a sparkplug is let alone a platform.

Some other info that I found interesting:
"The TSX is based upon the European version of the Honda Accord. The Euro Accord is sportier and positioned further upscale than its American counterpart. Not surprisingly, use of this car as a platform lends a more continental feel to the TSX. To begin with, there is the issue of size. Unlike the top Honda built for stateside buyers, the Euro version hasn't been super-sized. TSX is about half a foot shorter than the U.S. Accord, and two inches narrower. Wheelbase is roughly 3" shorter and while the suspension mirrors the American spec car (double wishbone, dual control arms front, five-link rear), it's more tautly tuned here."

all 3 acuras (TL/RL/TSX) are based off the accord platform. in essence, they're all accords oddly enough. if you look at the dimensions, the 3 cars aren't that much off from each other in terms of length and interior volume.
tsx is 2 inches shorter than the TL, which is ~2-3 inches shorter than the RL. honda is really efficient at cost cutting by sharing platforms. i still have the old Business Week article from 7-8 years back which talks about honda's global strategy to use a world platform beginning with the 6th gen (circa 98) accord. amazing.

1999 - Present TL's are Accord platform
2005 - Present RL's are Accord platform
2004 - Present TSX's are Accord platform
Your friend is wrong.

As far as I know Honda has 4 platforms, S2000, NSX and the global small car chassis and global mid size chassis. From the small car chassis, we build Civics, RSXs, CRVs etc. Now, the new platforms are actually three parts, and begining with the last gen CRV, you could "mix and match" subframes. This is how the CRV ended up with a mid size platform engine cradle (Accord 2.4 engine). From the mid-size chassis, we make everything else, Accord,TL, TSX, Accord cope. The midsize chassis modified with a ladder frame is the basis for the MDX, Pilot, Ridgeline, and Odyssey (notice all share the same 3.5 engine)..

The CR-V does NOT share a platform with the the MDX, Ody and Pilot. Its based off the Civic platform.
Almost every post in this thread should be completely ignored with the exception of Colin's, Ken's and TypeRS. Misinformation abounds in here.

EDIT:
2006 RL might share, but previous RLs were unique.

Your friend probably thought that because he thought the TL was the luxury Accord and the TSX since its smaller than the US Accord he thought it was a luxury Civic. What a moron.
I think Honda is taking the same route as Nissan by doing the global platform which is good. Honda just needs to put more torque in their engines and they're good to go.

Current RL's definently share. And I doubt the prev gen RL was unique but I don't know either way for sure.

For sure the first gen RL was based on the Legend's FWD platform (which itself has been argued to be/not to be a stretched Accord platform by many people), the new RL is based on this same platform and even though it has an AWD configuration, it is really a FWD platform (hence not possible to have a RWD configuration, and not really attractive to enthusiasts).
Accord based or not, I think too often people get too hung up on 'names'. The car is nice as it is, Accord based, Civic based, whatever. Just like when people say the TSX is 'just an Accord', or the new Civic is 'just a Civic'..... Just because some cars have (name) associations with another car, people make too much assumptions...

A friend of mine didn't like me saying that his Chrysler 300M was just a Dodge Intrepid with a different trunk and grill (among other interior options)
Same thing.

Your friend doesn't know what he is talking about, and he is really making a fool of himself. The Canadian Acura CSX is based off of a Civic, and like many have mentioned before, the TSX is based on the European / JDM Accords.

RDX is built on all-new Global light truck platform
There are three sizes of the global midsize platform , small medium and large (TSX, US Accord, TL)
Honda Element is built on the Universal Cosmos platform.... (Only an alien would like it)...

So, depending on how you want to read the "all new" part of the statement, you could say that the Civic Chassis is all new (ACE body structure). Or you could say the combination of SH + new Civic = All new Light truck.... the possibilities continue. I guess it all depends on what "all" is ALL.

i dug up my old article about honda's global platform strategy and it states how (at the time) the 6th gen accord's platform will be used "to build a mid-sized SUV under the acura luxury brand"
so that means... the MDX, Pilot and Odyssey are all based off a stretched accord platform...the same ones used for the RL/TL/TSX.

So it seems the 6th Gen Accord body style (coupe/sedan) is the one that started things off huh? Almost every Honda/Acura car has been a model or offspring of this design. Dang, I knew I should've kept my 99 Accord, it's like the prototype. I would have the TSX and Accord right now.
