Question

When I go to the Caculator I see Automotive in the Unit Conversion list but its not highlighted. The only thing that is highlighted is the Temp conversion. How do I get this to work?

Thanks in advance

Anyone else find that the MID is constantly over on the average MPG? Just filled up this morning and calculated 28.4 mpg, even though the display showed 30.3. I've gone through 4 tankfuls since getting the car (2008 - 6M no nav) and find that I'm an average of 1-1.5 mpg lower than the MID shows when I fill up. There's always going to be some variance, especially if you don't top it off, but my mileage is always lower than the MID shows.

504.9 miles with 15.762 gallons - that's 32.0 mpg, so the MID is off by 2.1 mpg. Too bad I didn't push it another ~40 miles!

The refill was US$ 67.45 ($4.279/gal)... I do know that's still cheap compared to many other places.

This was my first tank of Shell V-Power, and I am sold. It seemed easier to get this mileage with V-Power compared to any other fuel.

Here's my photographic evidence:

Jeez, I barely get over 300 miles before my MID says I'm almost out of gas...

me too - can someone explain what the heck they are doing to get 500 miles...

so your filling up driving on the freeway for 500 miles then refueling and ur range says 500?? i can't for the life of me get anywhere close. even at 50mph freeway for a whole tank...I only come up with like 380....

I did a significant amount of freeway driving... let's see:

I drove from my apartment in Denver to CU Boulder three times - it's about 26 miles each way, so that's (at least) 156 miles; plus I drove to Lonetree three times - 22 mile round trip, adding that in it's 222 freeway miles... All of that was at 65 or under; a lot of it was at 55. All of it was in the far right lane too, I have no need to slow anyone else down.

Most of the rest was city, easy driving, not grandpa but not flogging either. I follow some of the hypermileage rules on the highway and in the city (no jackrabbit starts, parking in easy to exit locations, coasting in gear or sometimes out of gear up to lights, I pay attention to crosswalk signals so I know when lights will change, I rarely race the engine, etc...) It works...

Sounds like your driving "habits" are much like mine.
I routinely get 30+mpg. I fillup when I'm close to stations we like....such as the Murphy Oils around certain Waltmart stores. Best gas prices and Ocotane is either 91 or 93 depending upon what they have

Oh, and I coast a lot and try to time lights whenever possible. My PWP 08 TSX seems to coast forever!

Congrats... I used to be "sold" on Shell V-Power too, but now it's my 2nd choice. I've gotten even better results with Valero 93. I don't know what additive they use, but it works! Give it a shot one time if you happen to find it in your area.

Btw... oddly enough, I get my best gas mileage (and my 2 500 mile tanks) when I accelerate briskly and maintain a relatively high cruising speed (~75mph) versus what you've described. I've been told by others on the forum that the engine is more efficient this way, but I have no scientific data to back that up...

I'm the latest to join the 500 mile club!!!

as discussed in another thread.. I've been using some hypermilling techniques on the last few tanks.. This is the result for the first tank...

My subsequent tanks weren't full fillups so I didn't make it to 500. but i'm sure I would have if I had continued driving..

since I have a 2004 6-spd w/o Nav.. these pics will have to do.. I took one at the half way point.. and one at fill up.. as you can see I still had room to spare..

Final fill up was 13 Gallons - resulting in 38.7 mpg.

i get about 400km(250miles) to the tank. i wish i was getting anything close to the numbers you guys are getting except i pretty much do no highway driving because i work and live in the city, so im in a alot of stop and go traffic. is this 250miles bad even though its all city driving, i also use 91 octane and i try not to jump on the peddal too much.

Last week, comming up from Charlotte, NC (I77, I81, I78) to New York, the yellow light went on at 540miles and I filled up in Perryville, NJ (I78) at 608 miles. I could have gone a little further but didn't want to chance it.

Mileage for the 700.5 total mile trip came out to be 33.6 MPG. Most of the miles were at 65 to 70 mph on cruise control. I was surprised at getting over 32 because NC and Virginia were hilly interstate miles and PA was not flat either.
pretty sure you're not supposed to top off your gas tank. once it stops, you're supposed to stop. even if you do it slowly, it can spit back out at you and that alone is dangerous enough to avoid it.

i have never topped off my tanks and used to get 500-550 miles on roughly 16-17 gallons when i owned my 05 TSX, so you really don't have to go that overboard to hit 500 miles.

I had a 500 mile tank a few weeks ago. 502.9 to be exact. I took a picture with my iPhone but I am having an issue uploading it (you will just have to take my word for it). My fill up was 15.8 gallons.

With the price of gas being what it is, I expect we're going to have a flood of members soon...

I still like Sammy Hagar's "I Can't Drive 55"... but I can't afford to go faster...

I think by the numbers I easily made it, but with a 5month old baby in the car, I didnt want to push it and get stuck in a traffic jam in Atlanta.
This was today's trip from Jacksonville, Fl to Knoxville, TN

460 on the trip - and the range showing approx 50 to go. We all know that actually means we could get more than that.

Im starting to think that the 500 club needs to be bumped up to 550 or 600 miles. Anyone should be able to reach this on a road-trip. I reached this easily, with the aircondition running, averaging 70mph, and even idling for well over 30 minutes at a rest area.

If you cannot reach 500miles on a tank during a long road-trip, you probably have some problem that needs to be addressed.

Best I've ever gotten was 465 all highway. Although that was with AC on and 4 people in the car.

It's easy to do with all freeway miles, unless you're massively accelerating and decelerating as you weave in and out of traffic like in some kind of high-speed movie chase. So yeah, I would support a higher number for all-freeway. I joined with a 50%/50% mix, which is a bit more difficult and requires a calmer touch...

I'd like to know how many members are 6MTs...?

I'm also wondering the same thing...because it is much easier for the 5AT'ers to get more miles out of a single tank of fuel than us 6MT'ers.

I have a 2006 6MT and I have been oh so close to the magical 500 mile mark on a few occassions. I guess I will keep plugging away. One Day I shall be on that list - Oh yes I shall!

06 6MT here as well.

My commutes are hardly long enough to achieve my desired mpg (40+), but I did manage 580 miles with one tank. If you go to the thread I posted my pictures in, you'll notice that my average speed was 59KM/hour which is a lowly 36mph. That should tell you how hard it is for me to get that kind of mileage out of my TSX. It took massive committment.

I don't drive slow btw. I'm always at or above the speed limit. I just coast from continent to continent!

Really? I thought the opposite. The 5MT has a better final drive, so it runs at a lower RPM at cruising speed and has a better EPA rating, but a 6MT is slightly more efficient (not trying to start a flame war here, a clutch is just a true on-off connection compared to a torque converter) and it seems easier (to me at least) to do hypermileage techniques in a 6MT.

Anyway, I'm a 6MT too.

Wow, now I'm super impressed; I can usually manage only about 32mpg. Like I said earlier, you're an inspiration!

Despite heavy headwinds, hot weather and Socal traffic I made it from San Jose to San Diego in one tank of gas . I left my parent's driveway yesterday at 4am, drove to Ventura and stopped at my apartment to drop stuff off. Then headed down the 101 and took PHC through Malibu to bypass the 101/405 interchange, I stopped at UCI to hang out at my friend's and then drove the rest of the way to SD.

I calculated out the mpg after refilling and I averaged 34.1, and I had a little over 2 gallons left.
