Three-Spoke Steering Wheel

I've never owned a car with a three-spoke steering wheel. I'm very close to buying a TSX. This is one of the things I'm a little concerned about. I drive a lot with my hand at the six o'clock position and was worried about whether I'd get used to not being able to do that.

What do you all think of the three-spoke vs. four-spoke steering wheel? Do you prefer one over the other or is it something you just get used to?

I just fine with it. I used to drive a BMW 325i with a 4-spoke and I've adjusted just fine. I'm still getting used to FWD again.

Sup Moda.

You'll get used to the three-spoke wheel in no time. I had the same concern and it turned out to be a non-issue.

You'll learn to love it. It feels very sporty and you have more freedom to grip the wheel in more places as oppose to having 4 spokes being in your way.

Not buying a car because of the steering wheel? That's a 1st...

No, I didn't mean that I was considering not buying it because of the steering wheel. It is just one of the many things that I am considering when choosing between the TSX and the Accord EX-V6. I certainly would make my decision based on the steering wheel alone.

What is making your decision so difficult?

Think again BD...

And before you go slamming a Nissan website...

http://www.mpi.mb.ca/english/dr_tips/handposition.html

I could find a slew of other websites, but I trust you, know how to use a search engine.

But hey, keep driving at 10&2. You'll enjoy having your wrists snap into little pieces if your airbag deploys and having those pieces are driven into your forehead.

It was a joke. I was pointing out the fact that having one hand on the wheel at 6 o'clock position, resting on your lap might not be the way to go. It's drivers like that that will cause your airbag to go off after they hit you because they have slower reflexes, less control and a delayed reaction time in that position.
Also, I was hit by a drunk driver 5 years ago, totaling my 92 Honda Prelude. My hands were crushing the wheel at 10 & 2, (I saw it coming) the airbag went off and I walked away without any injuries. So, I'm not sure what they are talking about as far as that goes, but then again, I am not limp wristed like some people on this board...:ghey:

Are you saying that you drive with your hands at the same position on the wheel (whether it's 10 & 2 or 9 & 3) at all times? If so, I find it pretty impressive that you could take a several hour trip and never move your hands from those positions. They must be really numb when you arrive at your destination.

What will the airbag do to a left hand at 12 with the right hand on the stick shift?

I'm not saying that they NEVER leave the wheel, I just make it a habit not to develop bad habits... I was just joking anyway...

Yeah, 3-spoke steering wheels are crap man. I would much rather have a 4-spoker. 3's look ugly too!

More important question: Where you been at, Blah? Been missing you!

About the 3-spoke thing: I never even noticed.....

I'm glad you brought it up. This particular driving position was strongly discouraged by the driving instructor where I attended a performance driving school a few years back. The instructor explained that by placing the hand at the 12 o'clock position, your own hand can smack yourself in the face when the airbag is deployed during an accident. Some drivers got knocked out cold during an accident and can't remember what had happened. Later during examination, reviewed the driver had suffered facial cuts not caused by the airbag but rather by his own hand or wrist watch!

Sorry, couldn't resist.

Must be a young crowd here if a three-spoke wheel is a novelty, as it was pretty much standard issue for years, especially before the advent of the airbag.

10 & 2, or 9 & 3? That's a personal preference... just try to get in the habit of driving with both hands on the wheel.

I never drive with both hands. Gotta have a free hand to shift, change radio stations, talk on cell phone, eat pizza, ect... That leaves only one hand for on the wheel.

I don't like the 3 spoke... and in fact I find the TSX to be a very uncomfortable car to drive in. My Explorer was more confortable on long drives... wtf is that?

What about the ever important 1 hand on the steering wheel, and 1 hand on the girls head?
