Question Stealership 40,000 mile check up rip off?

So i just called my local dealership down here in Tucson, AZ and asked them what the 40,000 mile check up would cost and cover and the lady quoted me $370 to $400. I about fell outta my chair.

Tell me, do you guys think this is too much? Any other recommendations are welcome!

What's done at the 40K marker? Top of my head - oil & filter change, maybe cabin and air intake filter change, check brake pads, fluid levels. 370 to 400 is steep for just that.

If you can do your own oil change and know how to put on the spare tire, then most of the routine maintenance stuff under 110,000miles can be done in your own garage.

That price is correct, i get all the scheduled maintenance at the dealer so I'm used to it. most of the time its just the $40 for the oil change.

I own a 06 tsx and have all my service done by acura/honda dealers. I follow the maintenance minder. My total cost so far does not equal that amount. My car now has 85,000+miles.

Over priced if it's still basic maintenance. I would do most, if not everything, yourself or elsewhere. Not sure what it totally entails but I couldn't imagine it something that couldn't be done yourself esp if it's just what PacMan stated.

IIRC, it was under $200 for my 40k service. I remember about $140. The more expensive services are 30k and 60k and whenever they change the cabin filters.

Yeh i thought it seemed a little steep. The 40,000 mile check up includes:

Oil Change
Rotate tires
Inspect rear and front brakes
Check parking brake adjustment.
Inspect tie rod ends, steering gear box, and boots.
Inspect suspension components.
Inspect driveshaft boots.
Inspect brake hoses and lines (including ABS).
Check all fluid levels, condition of fluids, and check for leaks.
Inspect exhaust system.
Inspect fuel lines and connections.

This can be done at a local shop for a heck of a lot less. Dont you think? The oil change is easy too.

Wow that is robbery. $400 for an oil change a rotation of tires and a 5 minute inspection that's too much. I think out local Honda dealer charges $130 for this. Either do this yourself or go to a local reputable shop. And just so you know, the 40k mile maintenance is made up by your dealer. This doesn't exist on your MM system, it is a A B 1,2,3,4,5 service.

04 and 05 models don't have the maintenance minder system. They just go by miles and have services at 20k, 30k, 40k, 50k, etc. However, dealerships still sometimes make up their own list of things to do just to pad the services more. If your dealership does this, just call them and ask how much it would be to do the services listed in the manual for that particular mileage.

since most dealers do a check of the car when you get an oill/filter change just tell them you want that done. A lot cheaper than asking for a certain mileage service,

I keep forgetting about this in the TSX. I know the Accord didn't have it for 03-05.

Had my 40k done today - $116 w/tax. They wanted to put in a new battery-$117+tax, resurface front rotors-$105+tax, new brake pads (pads at 15%) and resurface rears-$192+tax. I refuse to pay dealer labor $$ for things like that!

Do your own air filters (engine, cabin), fluid checks, and bring your own (synth) oil for the oil change. It should cost much less ... oh, and go to a different dealer.

it's a rip off. i talked to my local dealership and they quoted around the same price. called my mechanic and he laughed. i asked him if he'd do the "checkup" steps they mentioned in the handbook and he said it was a waste of time. i had him do it anyways since i was close to 50k for the warranty, and he charged me $85 for the checkup and the oil change. found no issues.

Before the 50,000 mile mark on my tsx came I had the dealer do a good inspection besides the normal oil/filer change, tire rotation/balance (I always have the tires balance when they are rotated=makes the tires last longer)I was charged $39.95. No issues found-still with the original brakes, battery-car had almost 86,000 miles now.

you've got a ton of highway miles on it. we replaced the back brakes at around 28,000 miles, front brakes at about 45,000. not bad for nyc area driving i think combined with some highway.
