Sportronic versus manual
Is there really a big difference between the 2 besides the fact that one is a 5 speed and the other is a 6 speed. i can't drive stick shift so i dont really know but is there really a big dfference between the 2.

yeah in the 6MT you keep the fun factor in the TSX I hear. Critics say that in the 5AT you are held back from all the fun of the high-revving engine. If you can't shift well, the Sport Shift gives you the ability to have some say in your shifting. It's fun for everyday Auto users. i believe the 6MT also runs 0-60 in more than a second's difference. (5AT=8.3, 6MT=7.2?) someone correct me if im wrong..

6spd is more fun but 5at is more practical. personally i dont care if it is a manual or auto, the biggest determining factor is how each feel. if both cars feel relatively the same than id get the auto, but if the 6spd feels more powerful then Ill get the 6spd. For the tsx I got the 6spd.

The 6MT is a quicker car, and more fun to drive.
But there are tradeoffs. Some of that quickness comes at the expense of gas mileage, so the 5AT is easier on the wallet. And that "fun to drive" factor goes away pretty quickly in stop and go traffic.
So depending on the person, and the circumstances, one will be a better choice over the other. Most TSX sales are AT, although on this site its probably 50/50.

i just notice whenever i use the sportshift i tend to lose on gas mileage in the TSX, i mean i shift from 1-5, while leaving it on automatic, i get better gas mileage.

The sport shift is a conventional automatic transmission with a driver-selectable shift mode. This should not be confused with the SMG (sequential manual gearbox) found on BMW's and Ferraris, which is a manual trasmission with a computer actuated clutch and gearbox.

yea i just found that out kiteboy. i always thought the at in SS mode had a limit of 5500 rpm. and yeah, of course, SMG is different than Tiptronic, Sportshift, Steptronic, etc... It amazes me how BMW can do that; a conventional Manual that can still understand the driving style of the driver and become an AT. It's so like a MT (that of course it is), that the Parking Brake needs to be applied. MT, AT, and paddle shift in 1 package. pretty cool.

You'd probably have to do a brake stand or nuetral drop (ouch!) to get the same launch as a MT. Also, the Sport Shift is still using the AT's watered down gearing, even if it does shift somewhat manually.
My 2000 predlude had the sport shift, and it was OK, but it is really no comparison if you want to drive aggresively. I always felt a little like I was getting less power than I paid for, so I went with the MT for my TSX. Mostly I believe it is just preference (what you prefer for your everyday driving), but MT is certainly faster.

"Sportronic"
Please don't use Mitsubishi trademarks to describe Honda features. Technically our system is trademarked as "Sequential SportShift." Mitsus suck ass.

Gear ratios
There is a big difference in the two trannies as far as gear ratios and differential.
The 6mt has a much "lower" gear ratio allowing for much better torque multiplication = go fast.
The 5at while convienent is more geared for cruising and slightly better fuel economy. You will lose quite a bit of the fun factor with the gearing in this tranny.
