Spare Key..

Used the search function and didnt get to much luck.

My GF ( her car) keeps a spare key around the house and at work, can we just get a blank cut? and not use the remote, I assume there is someone to disarm the alarm when using the key only...

I'm not looking for any upgrades yet on the key, just something spare ( and cheap) she can keep in her purse or wallet in case keys get locked in car.

Getting a blank cut would only allow you to unlock the car; you wouldn't be able to start the car without having a dealer-made key which includes a transponder chip. I assume you already knew that. Turning the key to open the door should disarm the alarm (I think; never tried it).

The chip in the key communicates with the immobilizer through the ignition switch. If you're not starting the car, you don't need a synched chip. The immobilizer, after all, is only meant to immobilze the vehicle (e.g., so that it can't be driven away). It doesn't protect the vehicle from unauthorized entrances by thieves (that's what aftermarket alarms are for, but they don't protect...they just announce ;-P).

Yep that answers the question. She likes to carry a spare key in her purse, and I usually have another spare at home. Can't hurt...

anyone have a cheap source for blanks?

Just go to any hardware store but don't tell them about the transponder chip in the oem key. Otherwise, most places won't cut it for you. I use the blank key as my tool to perform compression test without enabling the fuel pump or starting the engine.

If you have AAA, they have a free service so you can get one of those emergency plastic key things cut to stick in your wallet

You are right about turning the key to open the door which also disarm the stock alarm. If fact, anything that turns the door key cylinder to open the door would disarm the alarm because I have had this happen on my TL. Someone broke into my car with auto jigglers and took my aftermarket stereo system while my car was parked right by my bedroom window at night. I installed aftermarket alarm after that happens, at least it will make some noise.

but if they really wanted to steal something they would be smart enough to disarm that alarm before they do anything because they would see the blinking light in ur car, so they are assuming you have alarm, so they would disarm that first before doing anything further and getting caught

Yeah, I had the stock alarm with the red blinking light prior to someone broking into my car. They disarmed it by opening the door with something in the key cylinder. I now have aftermarket alarm and it will not disarm by unlocking the door with a key.
