I haven't been driving for a long time since i'm only 18 (2 years now) , but I have tried gas from various stations. I've been recording my gas mileage ever since i bought this TSX and, although it fluctuates, the mpg during the summer is about 24-26 and during the winter it is 22-24. Just recently, I have tried Shell V-power because of all the hype that I've read about. Oh my goodness...the gas is no joke. I am now a believer of V-power. The first time I tried it, i got 30mpg!! that's the same routes as before, when i got approximately 26 mpg (about 60/40 city/highway) It was simply incredible, I couldn't believe it. Today, for my spring break I went to the beach and back in one quick day trip and i calculated the mpg to be 36!! that is 85% highway ofcourse, but I was still thoroughly shocked. I probably average about 75 mph on the trip on the highway too.

FYI, I do my calculations on calculators. I fill up, divide how many miles i have on that tank by how many gallons went into it right then. Although this may be off be a little, i'd still have to say Shell puts some major steroids into their gas.

btw, I drive a 2004 Acura TSX 6-speed with a AEM SRI. The SRI probably helped a little but I also have 2 10in subs in the trunk...

theres one near my house, but seeing as my parents make me pay for gas nowadays.... gas is expensive enough at the station near my school ( a 76 i think)...

ill try the shell near my housr one day and see what happens

Very interesting... Shell by me at work but it's usually a bit more, I'll have to try sometime. Or on my way back down to PA/NJ from visiting family in NY, the cheapest gas is in Northeastern PA in Gibson, I'll have to fill up with V-Power there instead of getting a few gallons to ensure I make it to NJ where gas is cheap cheap cheap.

Hmm I use to search for certain Sunocos with 94.. rare to find now in NYC.. usually use BP (Amoco) and when i use Shell V-Power, it's great.. filled up with HESS yesterday though, 93 was $0.04 cheaper

I usually get 38 mpg on 90% highway, 30 mpg mixed, and I always thought this is what everyone else is getting.
I've had my 08 tsx for four months now and have only gone to Shell for gas so far, just because it's the closest to me.
I have an auto, but I occasionally use the sport shift (thats when the mpg goes down a bit). I guess I'll really have to stick with V-power!

My apologies to everyone that's tripping over themselves with their glowing superlatives concerning the performance of Shell gas, buy I just can't buy what you're selling. Gasoline is like toothpaste, laundry detergent, toilet paper, etc. Maybe a very small difference at the margin one way or the other, but competitive pressures (if nothing else) pretty much disallow any major difference in the performance of the product. How long do you think Mobil, Gulf, Sunoco, etc would be in business if Shell offered the same product that performed 10%-25% better? And at the same price? And yes, I've used Shell numerous times and don't recall getting any better mileage with it. Sorry, but it sounds a little like snake oil to me.

I usually fill up on Sunoco 93 since it's right near my house and average priced in this region (3.59 right now). The Shell down the street sells V-Power for something like 3.76. I'm not sure I'm prepared to make that jump for some potential placebo effect benefits.

Wow, you actually find 91? I don't think I've seen a pump with 91 anywhere for a long time. Everything around here is 87, 89, or 93.

Oh, and BTW, I don't think that gas from any gas station in particular would give you a 4MPG boost, assuming the same driving pattern and octane level in the gas.

Well, I usually fill up exactly once a week (friday's). So, Ill be filling up in about 2 hours, after my classes are over for the day. I usually always go to exxon or mobile, but today, Shell is going to take the cake, lets she how it does.

And btw, my friend wont put anything besides V-Power in his 04 350Z. He will literally drive 5 miles from where we live to go to the nearest shell station. (Our area has one gas station in a 3 mile radius, which is a exxon) Yes, they are always packed.

haha Shell V-Power is a little more expensive. It was 3.55/gallon whereas other gas would be about 3.45/gallon. I dont work for Shell, haha, i think i'm too young anyways. And yeah, you dont have to believe me, i'm just telling you all about my experience, and a LOT of other people do experience better gas mileage, sometimes even better performance, with the V-Power gas. I, however, didn't experience any noticeable performance change. I think some of you should give Shell a try. It'll cost you like, what, 4-5 more dollars after two fillups. Go try Shell for 2 full tanks of gas and you might get my kind of results. I just simply thought it was crazy because gas used to be gas for me. Now...Shell...mm mm good.

My Shell did 93 octane. Most of NC has only 87 89 and 93. It depends on the state. Some States have 91 instead of 93. I don't believe there is much of a difference at all.

you should also give lukoil a try
i used to fill up at exxon since its the closest and average around 300 miles a tank (this is from the maxima, not the TSX), dad took the car, filled up with lukoil, and even with agressive driving, i have gotten 350 miles and still no get gas light

Howerver I've switched to using shell, because of the additives that Shell advertises. Supposily you get cleaner fuel.

^^ about the additives..I really want to know the truth about all this gas. I'm sure gas companies have their own ways in producing their gas. But why did I get such a great benefit from Shell while others didn't? What exactly does Shell do to their gas...if anything?

And..i've never seen lukoil around here :/

placebo effect would be more related to if I had said "oh man, the car feels so much more powerful and peppier". I don't think a placebo effect can be put on actual calculations I did.

91 octane is the highest octane gas you can get here in California.

I've tried all different brands of gas and never noticed a difference. I typically get Shell because it's the closes to my house, but I don't favor any brands. I only stay away from gas stations that feel shady (poorly kept-up). Otherwise, I'll go for whoever is cheaper.

Believe it or not, I always go 5 miles per hour higher than the speed limit, so I cruise at 75...
I guess it has to do with how you drive and other factors (where the wind is blowing?) and not just the kind of gas you get
I always start out slow in terms of accelerating. But again, the 38 mpg Im getting is mostly highway. When I do stop and go traffic, it's more like 25 mpg.

I try to use Shell as much as I can. In Canada V-Power is 91 Oct, I think I paid $1.22/L last time I filled. I've never measured what milage I'm getting though.

It supposedly removes deposits from the intake system, and I figured if Ferrari was willing to stick with them for 60 years or so, might be something to it. And I get airmiles at Shell.

The other place I use sometimes because I have a discount card, doesn't seem to be as good. It sorta stuttered in second a lot, with V-power it never does.

i'm not doubting your increase in MPG, but your findings would be more credible if they were to happen over multiple fillups. there are many variables that could come into play with just one fillup.

Try this test. Fill up with Shell 5 times in a row. I assume you do the same route. Now fill up with Mobil 5 times in a row. Write down your results. See if it shows any difference in a chart.

I thought the V-Power was 94 octane. At least it was last time I went to a Shell. I'm going to fill up with it next time to see if I get better gas mileage. It was the only place that offered 94 oct vs 93 oct.

I only fill up with V-power and I got 420KM on 30Litres. Mostly highway (75%). From Toronto to Niagara Fall to Buffalo back to Niagara Fall and Toronto. 2nights and one day.

i think the octane rating depends alot on the state. I've never seen 94 here in NC.

Anyways, I really would like to try the Mobil vs. Shell gas, since i think they're two of the "best" (I'm saying that very carefully...heh...). However, Mobil gas station is >10miles from my house. I agree that i would need a lot more full tanks to actually be able to say Shell is really that great, but for now, after two fill ups, it's been great. I'll keep using shell for a few more times and i'll try and switch and tell everyone here my findings.

meh. I usually go to Chevron, 76, and shell. As long as I don't fill up w/ arco then I'm good.

I use either Shell or BP gas and i haven't seen any real difference between the two; i average 28-29 mpg city/hwy. I'll try a more scientific comparison and get back to you.

"V-Power" may be good but with Arco gas being 25-30 cents cheaper, guess where I'm going.

That's how I do it for accuracy's sake. The MID on my 2006 seems to be about 1 mpg generous than the miles/gallons filled method.

I just filled up at BJ's now you'll having me look for Shell. If the gas is only five or ten cents more than the $3.40 I'm usually paying ... I'm there. I usually go to the warehouse stores where I save between $0.10-0.05 per gallon, but really convenient location is as important for most folks.

I imagine that 91 is the most that you can get in Calif (he said, as a former resident and native San Fran boy), due to the restrictions on additives that state has. Things like MTBE, IIRC, boost octane and performance. (I watched a barge of MTBE burn to pieces in Houston while serving in teh Coast Guard there.)

I agree with others, buy the Shell for a couple of months and keep doing the calculation. Bear in mind also that formulations change a bit from winter to summer and back again. The Car Talk guys talk about this from time to time.

If you want to check how much fuel you have left and have Navi; bring up the diagnostic screen (hold map+menu+cancel). Choose "Functional Setup" and then "Trip Information". It'll tell you an average of how much fuel you have left, and an instantaneous measurement. You can see how much fuel it had when you filled up too.

^^ man navi people have it made. Yeah the winter to summer made a huge difference even before i used the Shell gas (refer back to my original post).

INteresting. I usually just note how much I dump in and compare with the "estimated range" on my MID. I find the sump is roughly 2.5 gals, maybe 3.1 (when the "(E)" light goes on), and that can get me ~60 miles before conk-out time. Again ... I'm not trying to do that like some people did in another thread.
