Service Manual - "Hidden" Diagnostics

After leafing through the 04/05 Service Manual, I came across a couple of diagnostic modes that you can enter without hooking the car up to the Honda Diagnostic System. I haven't tried this on mine yet (just got it a couple of days ago), but give it a try and let me know what you think...

From page 21-11 (Climate Control section):

The climate control unit has a diagnostic mode that allows you to view sensor inputs that it receives. To run the sensor input display mode:

1. Turn the ignition switch off.
2. Press and hold both AUTO and DUAL buttons, and start the engine.
3. After the engine starts, release both buttons.
4. The audio-HVAC display will flash a sensor number, then value for the sensor.
5. To adavnce to the next sensor, press the rear window defogger button.
6. To cancel this mode, press AUTO, or turn off ignition.

Sensor numbers, descriptions, and display values as follows:

1. In-car temp (degrees C).
2. Outside temp (C).
3. Solar radiation sensor value (00=dark, 10=cloudy, 65=sunny).
4. Engine coolant temp (C).
5. Evaporator outlet air temp (C).
6. Driver's air mix opening (low=cool, high=warm, %).
7. Passenger's air mix opening (low=cool, high=warm, %).
8. Vehicle speed (km/h).
9. Vent temp air out (C).

That's right - you have a digital speedo in your car!

You'll have to convert degress Celcius and kilometers per hour if you are in the good ol' USA.

Have fun!

Isn't there an easier way to get the current in-car temperature??

Thanks Dan!

There's an even COOLER one on page 22-218 (Guage section) that will cause your gauges to do a full sweep test, among other things (LCD checks, switch checks, etc).

Its just a lot hard to explain and I'm too lazy to type it in. Perhaps a scan is in order...

The manual does not specify, so I'm assuming it works for both. Mine is non-navi, so I'll post when I get a chance to test it.

No no, my question was, is there an easier way to get the inside temp, like while you're driving. This method forces you to turn off and on the ignition.

OOPS! I thought you were referring to the regular climate control display. Sorry...

The method mentioned above was the only one that I could find in the manual.

I just tried this out too. I couldn't get the diagnostic mode to stay on after starting up the engine. It would only work for me when I placed the ignition switch to ON...

I tried it too, too bad it keeps blinking between the senor number and then the sensor value. I thought it would display both the sensor number and the value so the digital speedo can actually be read. I guess not.

I'm here! I'll try and scan the pages tonight.

Don't get too excited... The full sweep guage test can't be set to run every time you start your car (at least not according to the manual). There's quite a lengthy sequence of "to do's" to get it to run. Stay tuned!

I figured it out when I tried it getting in my car to go home from work. I was doing what I usually do, which is turn the ignition switch to on, waiting a few seconds, and then starting the car. If I started the car in one turn, then the diagnostic mode works.

Here they are! The scans are low quality, to keep the .JPG size down:

Service Manual Page 22-218

Service Manual Page 22-219

Just curious... Is there an easier way to host these files than on my own WWW space?

Enjoy!

Thanks for the info, Mr. Sparkle! But I'd just like to point out that the speedometer unit is not km/h, but 10 km/h.

The manual doesn't reflect that. Hmmm...

That doesn't make for a very precise digital speedo, now does it?

I still have yet to try all of this stuff myself!

I concur on the digital speedo units. I was wondering why I was going 45 and the speedo was only reading "04"...

For reference, here's the original manual page regarding the sensor testing:

Hey, I tried to do the gauge sweep thing but it doesn't work . . .

I turned the ignition to ON with the RES and headlights on, and did the lights off, on, off, press RES 3 times sequence, but didn't get any indication that I'm in the self-diagnosis mode. I tried pressing the RES switch but was unable to get the sweep.

What's confusing in the diagram on page 22-219 is that I'm not sure what the 5 beeper signals at the beginning corresponds to. When I first turned ignition ON, I do hear 5 beeper signals, but that's before I did the lights off, on, off, RES 3 times sequence so according to the diagram on 22-218, at that time I couldn't have been in the self-diagnosis mode like 22-219 suggests.

Anyone had any luck with this?

Oh, I think I know what's happening now. I was pressing the wrong trip/reset button! I thought it was the the cruise control RES button on the steering wheel, but I think it's really the button on the dash. Lemme try again . . .

Why, it cleans out all the dust out of the gages. j/k

Gage sweep forces the gages to travel their entire arc. i.e. the fuel gage will go from indicating totally full to totally empty.

But for this to occur, the driver must perform those step by step actions every time they start the car right? Or is this a one time setting where the gauges will automatically travel their entire arc. continuously FOREVER and EVER!!

So I did the gauge cluster test and it worked fine, but I got an "Error 2" message. Can someone look up what that error means? On the second page that was scaned it said for and Error 2 message go to page 22-77. What the hell could be wrong with my car? Could the car possibly be seeing that the factory amp is no longer in the car?
