S2000 vs. TSX tranny.

Similar? Different? Identical???? (someone told me this)

Reason I ask is because the only manual tranny I have driven on has been an S2000.
How does it compare, (clutch, throws, etc.) with the TSX 6MT?

Nothing at all is the same. The TSX is mounted to a transverse engine and the S2000 is longitudinal. Throws are shorter in teh S2000, the clutch has less play in the pedal (easier to use, though lighter and takes an adjustment to get used to) in the TSX...this coming from a previous owner of an S2000.

Much softer clutch on the TSX, longer throws on the shifter too. I read somewhere we're talking 41mm vs. 31 mm. but I can't remember the source nor verify if this is really true. But it is definately longer throws.

Like I said. Longer throws in the TSX. Hey, Colin, I got your PM the other day and then couldn't reply to it...we all know why now. All is good over here. I even tried to call you at the store and then they told me you don't work Saturdays. You suck. I work 9-9 on Saturdays.

It's actually 45mm vs 35mm as quoted by Car and Driver.

the tranny is connect to the engine on the side. Therefore, on a longitudinal engine, the shifter is usually directly connect to the tranny, whereas on a transverse engine, you have shift linkages.

ah.....I understand....
so I'm sure the TSX tranny would be simpler to operate because of that as well, am I wrong?

Hey, I also don't work too many Sundays (autox, track days etc.) Since I don't really work the sales floor, unless I have an appointment, I don't usually go in and "sit around". I just tried to call you, and you've already gone for the day.................receptionist said something that sounded like "bankers hours" but it was probably just a bad connection. :P

I wouldn't say "simpler"....I'd probably only say that the TSX tranny is more "disconnected" for the NVH levels that should be on a car of its type. The S2000 tranny is A LOT more fun and a lot more connected, giving you a better feel for what the car is doing. Plus, its an all-around better tranny for the enthusiast. The TSX tranny is more for the normal driver. I think thats a reasonable comparison.

Here's how the S2000 tranny is:

and what about the TSX?

that disappoints me
I learned on an S2K, and it was fun as hell....
so how would compare that to driving a TSX.
Is this 6MT still fun? Easier to handle? Harder to handle?

Why not drive one and decide for yourself? I personally think the TSX 6sp. is one of the best gear shifts I've ever driven. I've only driven an S2K once, and it was some time ago.

Cheers,

DEFINITELY still fun to drive a TSX 6MT. I've only driven an S2000 once, but I'll say the TSX is definitely easier to handle in terms of the clutch pedal. The shifters are about the same with the S2000 a bit more solid and with shorter throws. But even though S2k 6MT > TSX 6MT you have to remember that some people say that the S2000 has the best manual tranny in the world.

I'd rate the TSX manual third (in cars I've driven) behind the S2k and Miata.

Edit: Have you test driven a TSX yet? If not, do it!

As an owner of an S2000, I have to say that nothing compares (completely unbiased opinion here ). I guess the fact that they both have 6 gears is reason enough to compare but they are 2 different cars. Anyway, on my test drive with the TSX, I had a heck of a time going from 5th to 6th.... keep wanting to go into 4th. Anyway, like everybody else said, longer throws, softer pedal feel, etc...

On a side note... my model year (2000) of my S2000 did have a problem with the clutch pressure plate. When you let up on the gas, there was this noise that sounded like an exhaust noise but turned out to be the pressure plate flexing (light weight version). I never noticed the noise but my dad who happens to be a service manager for Honda noticed the noise and had the 2003 version (clutch and pressure plate) swapped in (covered under warranty). The 2003 model year reinforced this area. Now I could hear the real exhaust note and it sounded so much sweeter.
