Yes, i am experiencing this and its driving me nuts. There have been a few threads on it as well. Some have this problem, and then some dont. It may be related to shift style..not sure. Try searching for notchiness and you may find some threads on the issue.

I can bog the engine and "lurch" if I'm not careful.

I usually feather the clutch a bit on 1-2.

Just rev the first gear to 6500 RPM then shift to 3rd gear... You won't get the problem.

Yeah i had that, too. It only happens when i try to shit at mid to high RPMs from 1st to 2nd but if i shift at low RPMs it's smooth like a butter. I was gonna get it checked out but now my car is in the shop cuz it got rear ended.
umh i've never tried shifting from 1st to 3rd. Maybe you should try cuz if it's smooth then the there is something wrong with 2nd gear syncros

Does this have the same effect on the AT with sportshift?

Just to clarify, I think there are two issues here (both discussed previously on other threads):

1)Something about the 2nd gear slot isn't quite as smooth as the others (I think this is what some refer to as "notchiness"), which can result in a grind more easily than in other gears if you're not careful.

2)Bogging on the 1-2 shift. Maybe the flat torque curve or the drive-by-wire or a combination of both, but most people agree that you don't get much of an acceleration rush when pushing hard into 2nd gear. It takes a concentration and some practice to avoid the bog, but pickup is always lacking immediately after the shift into 2nd. 3rd gear is where the TSX shows its stuff

On a related topic: I'm a little frustrated with the amount of gas I have to give it when starting from a stop. I've got 5 months and 5000 miles behind the wheel on the TSX, 12 years of MT experience, and I'm still chirping the tires occasionally to avoid bogging from a standstill. It's kinda like the clutch is too worn in -- I prefer that new clutch feeling where it grabs quickly. I hate to admit it, but I like my girlfriend's '03 Accord clutch feel better (along with the nice pickup in 2nd gear). No biggie, but since we're talking about it...

My box is the same way. It's much less notchy if you don't hold the shifter to the left excessively. It's even less notchy (actually it's perfect) if you don't make the synchros do a lot of work. So it's a synchro issue, but what can you do? I think that even if they do swap the 1/2 synchros out, you'll have the same problem (unless they've changed the design).

Between 1800 and 2200 I'd say.

Interesting... How do you define "bogging from a standstill", Hammer? RPMs dip too much, or....?

I guess it's not really bogging as in the 1-2 shift sense, but you know that shaking/vibration when engaging the clutch without giving it enough gas -- it's just not smooth. With other MT cars I've driven, they didn't require as much concentration from a standstill. It's really not much more than an observation, but it does bug me occasionally.

I plan to buy some stickier tires soon (definintely don't need the all-seasons in SoCal), so the chirping oughtta be a thing of the past anyway.

I had the same issue with my Miata (one of the best 5MTs ever may IMHO) and with my Jetta, so it may be something common to many cars. I have the 5AT so I can't speak for the TSX. But first to second is the biggest jump in ratio, is it not? Would that not cause the engine to bog?

Gotcha. I only get that shaking when it gets to 700 RPM or less, and I usually try to keep it above that. I never really thought about how much gas I have to give her to accomplish that, but

Stickier tires would definitely eliminate the chirping, but it seems to me that they'd also make you more prone to bogging off the line (due to the higher grip). So you'd have to gas it even more. Right?

My Golf had the same problem from 1-2 so I really wouldn't worry too much about it. I think this is fairly common. 3rd gear is a pretty sweet gear for most cars.
