RHode Island

God damnit!? So i move in to college Sunday the 4th of september. I was driving up in my TSX, my sister in her mazda 3. So we finally get off I95 and were on this road called kingston road where for most of it the speed limit is 45 mph. So were goin between 45 and 50 mph. A few miles down my radar goes off so i slow down to 40 while my sis in front of me and shes goin around 45-50. So the cop slams on her brakes and turns around slowly pulls up to me, looks into my window (35% tint) and keeps goin and pulls up in front of me and pulls my sister over, and from what i hear tinting any of the windows is illegal here, but anyway. The officer tells my sister she was doing 48 in a 25. Well thats good and all but the 25mph speed zone doesnt start for another like 400 feet. SO the lady said she was being nice and gave my sister a 75 dollar ticket instead of a 300 dollar ticket. Well that would be nice of her if we were not in a 45 mph speedzone still. Now my question is should she fight the ticket? A few other questions....What is the law about tints in RI? and I odnt have a front plate, is that illegal here too? Seems to me the cops have wayyyy to much time because i seriously saw one on every corner after that. Please help me out guys, i dont feel like getting a ticket.

You probably don't have to worry too much since you will likely have out of state plates. Since every state has different regulations regarding what modifications to a car are legal, you can probably get away with the tints and no front plate since you're from out of state.

Bad advice... ALWAYS FIGHT YOUR TICKETS! They at the very least usually cut down the fee. Also, you don't want it affecting your insurance.... Granted most states don't talk to other states aout tickets, you should still fight it on principle...

I'm 90% certain that they can't bust you for tints if your car is registered out of state....

if they were holding out of staters to thier tinting policy you would have to rip off ure tint whenever u left ure state. and i dont think they can pull you over either for illegal tints, speically if you have out of state plates

Having illegal tints are a non moving violation, meaning you cant just get pulled over because they see you have dark tints. Only way you could get in trouble is if you get pulled over for speeding or some other infraction and then they can give you a ticket for illegal tints. But since your car is registered out of state, i dont think it will be a problem.

I have 5% tint, and ive been warned twice about it but still havent gotten a ticket.

Well, I'm sorry to tell you, but the cops in RI LOVE that road and always pull people over there. The speed limit goes up and down constantly, and you really have to pay attention to it. I went to URI as well, graduated in 2001. In NJ now. Be careful all up and down Rt. 108 too - they sit all over the place there. I don't know anything about the tint laws, but you can check somewhere on tintcenter.com for state laws. Good luck, and watch your speed!!

Also, watch out on campus, as one year I was there, I saw an SUV with all 4 wheels stolen off it on Flagg Rd. And potholes GALORE all over RI!!!!!

all tinting is illegal in RI. Although, I have 20% on my black CL and haven't had a problem for over 8 months. By the way, the cop that pulled you over is an SK cop...they're dicks, especially right now when all the college kids are returning. In about a month they'll relax a little bit. I go to URI too, maybe you'll see my car around.

Dont just pay the ticket. Certain states databses are linked with each other. So it may be possible that your insurance might go up.
What i would do is fight the ticket. If the 25mph zone hasn't started yet... you should not have gotten the ticket to begin with.
Worst case scenario after fighting it, they make you pay it.

You definitely should fight it. You should not be able to be held to RI tint laws if you are not registered in RI.

As far as fighting the ticket, show up with evidence. Have a digital camera? go to the exact spot you got pulled over and take a picture of that 25 mph sign... then go back to the next sign (based on your story it will be a 45mph sign) and take pics of that. Be sure to try and get reference points in the picture, like a store on the side of the road, or even a house (though that might be difficult on that road since it is all woods, but do your best). Bring all of those pictures printed out with captions along with any other evidence you might think useful (Looking for suggestions from the forum here)

The best situation would be if the cop doesn't even show up, then the ticket gets tossed out, otherwise you can use your evidence. Good Luck!

Tell your sister good luck from all of us here on the forum. Make sure to get that evidence and hope the cop doesn't even show up.
