replacing oil filter mid oil change schedule?

Hey,
sounds sorta confusing, sorry.
well i will be changing my oil this weekend hopefully and im at the 20k mile point. i bought a few filters becuase they were onsale or whatever and were cheap. now my question is, can i change the oil filter say at 25k miles and then just top off the oil?
the oil wont spill from the hole will it?
and ive been running mobil 1 full synthetic since the first oil change.
thanks

No, the oil will only spill out of the oil filter a little bit since there will be some left in the filter. But you wont actually drain the oil from the pan unless you undo the oil drain bolt at the bottom.
I dont see what's wrong with changing filter and not oil. Although... unless you're using amsoil, i wouldn't go 20k an oil change. Even with amsoil, their oil has a habit of thickening over time although it still has enough elements in it to protect. But... out engines dont like thicker oil at all.

I do a full oil change at every 5k and use Mobil 1 as well. So what is your interval?

Yes you can just remove the oil filter, but I would wait until engine is fully cold. I have found this is when there is the least amount of oil in the filter. Check the oil level next time you get in from a good drive and you've let the car cool.

well i used to be right on with the schedule. it was easy during hs where i had access to my garage and could bring it to the dealership within a days notice. now im at college my car sits in the parking lot most of the week and i head home once a weekend for a few hours so i have to make a greater effort to get the maintence done during that time, while the little things i try n do in the lot... that and now the dealership is much further (ie school).

so this time i havent changed the oil in say around 9k miles. this weekend is creeping up the 20k mark.

so id like to start changing the oil every 6k miles and the filter at 3 or maybe push it out to 8, depending on what the oil looks like... right now its in dire need of change.

Why are you not paying $15 (under $4 per L) for conventional oil and changing that at the quicker interval with the filter. If you've got the time, you might as well do it. There are still contaminants in the oil - the filter holds onto larger contaminants. Except in the winter, I use conventional oil for spring, summer, fall - but then again, I don't rev high so the synthetic oil in the warmer weather doesn't benefit me.

Why don't you change the filter at the same time as you change the oil? Then you won't have to stagger your DIY periods.

well see thats the thing, ill make time to do it and i always thought synthetic oil lasted the full say 8 or 10k miles just needed to be properly filtered. i mean it stayed pretty good until say 7k miles already.
plus the filters werent expensive and name brand... fram.

oh yeah, where can i get those crush washers, and what size are they?

Because as the filter becomes more loaded up with contaminants, the flow will drop and allow the filter to operate more efficiently. Same applies to air filters. Same reason why Honda recommends a filter change every other oil change.

Provided that the filter is well constructed and does not disintegrate, the media can last for 7-10K...

FRAM ???

The irony is that despite their reputation for producing poor quality, overpriced products, the 7317 FRAM has 1.5x (or more) the media contained in the low-end Champs filters.

For extended service, the "Tough Guard" FRAM 7317 for $5 is a better choice...
