Replacing a Jetta for a TSX Club!!
#42
I had a 99 Satin Silver Passat w/ 5sp Tiptronic. Major problems included squeaky front suspension and the Mass Air Flow Sensor. VW covered about 50% of both repair bills. Minor issues included crazy one-touch power windows and intermittent on/off check engine light. Also, the car wouldn't start the second time if I turned it off before the engine was warmed up. It was really annoying especially if I just wanted to move it in or out of the garage. I had to drive it around the block. It would eventually start if I floored the gas and cranked it for 15 or 20 seconds. The battery was good though. I had it for 6 years and never changed the battery.
Finally got rid of it when VW started charging CAN$70+ for an oil change. A service bulletin was issued that all 1.8T engine had to use synthetic oil.
I love my 05 TSX and never look back. I do miss the cool flip-keys and trip computer on the Passat though.

1.) Oil Leak
2.) Barrings issue
3.) Shift replace
4.) ICM (Ignition Module)
5.) Left side headlight wiring problems
6.) Windows dropped (clip issue)
7.) Drinks synthetic oil at 4k kms
8.) Heated side mirrors didn't work
9.) Engine light on sometimes
10.) Weird suspension noise that I didn't even bother fixing it and sold it.
However, I loved that car, and still do. Even after a yr of TSX, I still miss that Passat. Just too much to fix, in too lil time. Happy with TSX however.

I'm still on the Jetta side of the fence. Maybe one of these days.
I really like the TSX, but I just can't give up the turbo (and the TSX trunk is a wee bit small)...

When I test drove the GTI, I mentioned the horrible VW reliability to the salesman and he actually admitted VW has a reliability problem. He also mentions reliability has improved alot since 2005, which really means nothing since there's no long term statistics yet.

Anyway, compare the opening and shape of your trunk with this:

Versus the TSX trunk:
