Reasonableness of paint repair costs

Yesterday, I backed out of a parking space into another parked car. Not paying attention. The middle of my rear bumper hit the corner of his rear bumper. The damage to my 07 TSX was minimal. The damage to his car amounted to some paint coming off at the corner. I suspect that the plastic flexed causing the paint damage. I left a note with my contact information.

He got an estimate of $400 to "refinish" the damage area and repaint including clear coat. His car is a Nissan Altima, perhaps 3 or 4 years old. For those of you who have had repairs of this sort done, does the $400 sound reasonable? I plan to pay for it out of pocket because to let my insurance cover it would cost me $360 over the next 3 years, plus somewhat more, I don't know perhaps 50 to 60% of that over subsequent periods.

New bumper (because you shouldn't fix plastic)

Paint and blend new bumper (because if you dont blend it looks like shit)

Bumper reinforcement (because it probably broke "foam")

400 Sounds cheap to me .

$400 is very cheap, no matter what work is done.
I'd go for it and call it good.

get yourself a backup camera.

Or he could look where he is reversing to. What happened to using sense and driving as opposed to relying on technology? Its not hard just turn your body and head around to look out back while reversing. And paying attention while behind the wheel

I got a quote from "the best" body shop in my city and they charge 426 to fix some nix here and there on my car (but I never followed through with the deal because at the time, I thought it was a lot) so yea... I would say it's reasonable.

400 is reasonable.

i had to redo my whole back bumper, bumper lip, and fender (gas lid side) and it ran me $950 for everything. that price was notably lower than the normal rate which would've run me around $1200.

Thanks all. I'm going for it. As to paying attention, you are absolutely correct. Lesson learned, I hope. A relatively inexpensive lesson. I'm much better on the road.

Too bad there is no reputation system here. I'd give props to the OP for doing the right thing.
