It's a little ugly. Makes sense to have one, but ugly. It'd be definitely useful in the winter, where you always get snow blowing over the roof and sticking to the back window, killing your visibility.
I noticed the original photos of the Japanese Legacy have the wiper, but the photos cg878 took at an auto show showed a Legacy without rear wiper.

The entire car seems to sit a little higher, I'd guess because of the AWD system. Also the small-ish (14"?) wheels don't add to the appearance.
The package is probably more useful on the northern Japanese island, Hokkaido, than on the southern islands.

When my wife (who by the way is European) test drove this car, her first question was "Where is the rear window wiper?". She wouldn't let it go. I had to show her all the other four door cars that did not have it. Her only reply, "That still doesn't make it right."

I personally would love to have a rear windshield wiper, especially in my climate!!!
