Question about Gas

I am a new tsx lover..

I got a small question about the fuel that I should use..
It says I should use only premium gas...Is that a huge problem if I use a regular gas?
As you guys know the price keeps increasing...especially here New York City...about 2.40 per gallon....

Premium Pearl White/ No Nav/ 3400miles

You're lucky man. We pay US$3.36 per gal of premium gas here in Australia.

Ok, here's the short story: Use premium, you're better off with it, and it says so in the manual.

Now, here's the long story : It is possible to use regular (87 octane) gas OCCASIONALLY. The reason why you need to use premium on the TSX is because of the relatively high comprssion ratio of the pistons (10.5:1), added with lots of advance in timing.

When you use regular, you risk experiencing detonation, the best way to know it happens is when you hear pinging. The ECU will detect this through the knock sensor, and it will react by retarding the timing enough to prevent pinging when your engine is healthy. This usually is the case when you use regular, but as your enigne wears down and deposits accumulate, it may also occur with 91 octane (at least I believe so).

When the ECU retards fire, you will get a noticeable decrease in power, in the order of 15-20hp. Also, some people here have noticed that their gas mileage decreased so much that it was more worthwhile to put in premium octane anyways.

At any rate, you should really avoid using regular, as it can induce undue wear in the long run.

Hope it helps, good luck.

$1.96 premium v-power (or v-whatever it is) in San Antonio. I'm going to have to fill up a few extra cans before my next road trip to Australia
