I was on my normal commute to work this morning. There was an area of the freeway where it goes from 4 lanes to 3. There were some slow cars in the lane next to me, so I downshifted and sped up so that I could safely pass those cars before the lane merge. With an SC though, you can easily go from 75 mph to 100+ without realizing. Drop it from 5th to 3rd gear and you'll quickly gain like 25 mph of speed.

After I passed them all, I look up in the rear view and there's an undercover cop there. I'm guessing he had just merged onto the freeway because there was an onramp near by and it seemed like he came out of no where. He flipped on his lights and pulled me over.

After I pulled off and he asked for my license, insurance, and registration. He told me I was going 105 mph and I thought that I was done at that point. He went to run my record, and when he came back he told me that going over 105 mph was a misdemeanor and he could arrest me on the spot and impound my car. I was very apologetic and told him that I should know better than to be going that fast. I got SUPER lucky, because he was a younger guy and he ended up just letting me off for a warning. He told me that he was giving me a big ass chance, and I thanked him.

My heart was beating super fast after he left, and I know that I got really lucky. He could have very easily been a prick about it and threw the book at me. I was talking to one of my friends this morning and he was like you're having a little too much fun with your supercharger, you need to chill out. I think he's right, I'm driving like a grandma from now on! You guys probably won't be hearing anymore freeway race stories from me, I'm lucky to still even be driving my TSX

What fwy was this? And yes, the grandma spell will affect you for just a bit, but then the speed racer syndrome will kick in again.

Just to clarify a bit. The average speed on I-5 in that area is somewhere near 80mph so Kenny was doing about 25mph over that. Not quite the same as doing 105mph on the 110 here in LA (which I've seen :shakehead ).

 

^^ Yeah during my commute, traffic is light and everyone is usually going 80-85 mph. If you are going speed limit (70 mph) then you might end up getting tailgated. I try to be a safe driver and pass only if there's a lot of room.

YOU are fucking lucky. A few years ago, I got stopped for going 120 MPH on the 210 in Pasadena. $900 fine, 30 license suspension. 2 pointer. Luckily, they did not do what you mentioned, jail and impound my car.

No I was not racing, just wanting to get home after they freaking closed certain freeways for contruction so I had to make a huge detour

So your Valentine 1 didn't go off, even though the cop clocked you at 105??? Unless the cop was completely BSing you, I can't imagine the V1 not going crazy considering it's the most sensitive radar I've ever used.

If I were you I would go immediately and buy a lottery ticket because this is clearly the luckiest day of your life. Man, I thought you were going to say you were toast. I did the same thing -- passed cars to pop into an opening before a lane closed -- and got a $125 ticket and four points doing 85 in a 70.

 

Sounds like me my daily commute to work I hit 80-100 and I'm not the only one.

 

Do you go on the turnpike? I used to take the turnpike to work everyday, going ~85, which was right with traffic. Go 70, and you risk being run off the road, lol. A cop would be sitting at the New Brunswick exit almost every day and not even bat an eye at everyone zipping by.

 

Rt 78 there are never any cops until you get further west by where you are at. Take that back this morning a trooper pulled over a dumb soccer mom who decided to cross the median from the express to local without realizing there was a cop behind her

I know that having a supercharger makes you want to go fast, but try to control it as much as possible.

Use cruise control. Find a desolate place to stretch the engine a bit now and then to satisfy your taste for speed.

Always go with the majority of traffic. NEVER stand out by passing cars.

Hahaha....that was dumb (and dangerous!). And yup, 78 is cop-ridden out this direction for sure. I used to take 78 for another job and would never go over 75 from here to Clinton when I got on 31. They love to hide in the sections of trees/bushes.

I think he hit me with instant on, meaning the radar powered on and clocked the speed with the press of one button. I didn't get anything until the last minute. I usually only pick up CHP on Ka Band around my area though, and even they don't always ride whith their radar on. You should remember that radars are not full proof. There have been times when I've seen the CHP creep up with it off, and then turn it on. I still pick up a large percentage of the CHP, but not all. Also, if they hit you with laser then there is nothing you can do about it unless you have a jammer. Once you pick up the laser, you're done.

Around what time do you commute? Never seen you around I am usually on I-5 around 6:30 a.m.

 

What version is your V1? I've got the v1.8 w/ POP2 and that feature has definitely saved me a few times. It does tend to false a bit more with it on, but the money I've saved more than makes up for the annoyance factor.

 

I'm actually thinking about picking one up now...haha. Yeah, I thought I was toast too. I was really fortunate and I'm going to let this be a lesson for me. I am seriously going to try to change my driving habits. It helps to hear stories like this from everyone though. Helps remind me about the consequences for my actions.


Thanks man, that's good advice. I know that I was very fortunate. I didn't realize that I was going quite that fast. SC or not, it's no excuse for me though. If my car would have been impounded, I don't know what I would have done.


You're trippin' man. I don't think that would have been the way to get out of the ticket. I think the way I handled the situation was one of the reasons why he let me off. And I use to have the same attitude that's it's ok, to do 100+ reguarly, in fact I've done that for the last few months since getting the SC. It only takes one time for you to get screwed though, so hopefully my lesson will help you learn to slow down too.

You got lucked out i got stopped and got 2 tickets before just going 40 on a 30mph zone and i didn't stop for 2 more blocks since i didn't know the cop behind me turned on his lights and tried to stop me i thought he had some emergency so i slowed down thinking he was going to pass me, but turns out he was after me sheesh so he gave me a 2nd ticket for failing to stop for 2 blocks sucks ass. That was over 10 years ago tho, anyways i still can't get over that, pissed me off anyways i went to court and they drop the 2nd ticket so i had to just pay for the speeding ticket. You went 100+ mph and got no ticket you got lucky, just don't do that again heh.

 

POP radars are actually very similar to instant-on radars, but they emit shorter, more rapid bursts within the K and KA bands (33.8GHz to be exact). The majority of radars out there can't even efficiently pick up POP except the Big 3 (Valentine 1, Escort 8500 x50, Bel RX65).

There are many people who believe that POP is so rarely used that it is not a real threat, either because their local police stations have not made the switch or the ones that have switched do not train their officers to use it properly. IME, it all depends on where you live. I often drive through upstate NY, and NY State Troopers are angry, ruthless, and love their POP radars. For me, POP has made a difference, but YMMV.
