Power steering leak - $1800 repair?
Hi all,
I noticed today that my power steering fluid level was low, the reservoir is almost empty. The mechanic found no external leaks. He said there is internal leak somewhere, most likely bad seal and to fix it he has to take it apart and replace some parts, $1800 worth of repairs with parts and labor. He also said I shouldn't add any more fluid as it will leak inside, build up pressure and eventually blow rubber boot sealing it. And if I run out of fluid I may burn steering fluid pump.
Any of this makes sense? Any ideas what repairs/diagnostics I can do before paying them to fix it?

yes, I have a suggestion.
never call that shop back again.
go to another one, get a second opinion.
never mention you had a first opinion.
just take it to a different shop.
maybe even pay a dealer a 1/2 hour's worth of labor
to have them inspect it.
never trust a mechanic throwing out big numbers like that
for a problem you cannot even see or notice.

This just happened to me on an 04 Acura TL, the dealer said I have an internal leak, but I have no problems with fluid levels or leakage externally at all. The steering has no flat spots. I'm wondering if there is a TSB on it?

If there is, it might identify the problem, but it wouldn't do you any good as far as having it fixed though. With a 7 year old car, you'd have to pick up the tab.

L.A. > the rest
Go to any Acura dealership.
DO NOT SAY A WORD about any pre-existing problem.
TELL THEM, " I'm here about the power steering hose recall. "
They replace it FOR FREE!!!
Eat and drink complimentary donuts and coffee for about 2-3 hours and then drive home a happy camper.
