Parking Brake Ratcheting

I don't remember my TSX having a very loud ratchet sound (if any) upon applying the parking brake. I got my car back from the dealer today after an alignment check and now my parking brake has a really loud ratchet sound when I pull the handle up. There shouldn't have been any reason for the service guy to even touch my p-brake (aside from when he parked the car), so I'm wondering what happened? Now I'm starting to second guess myself about whether there was any ratchet sound at all when I used to apply the parking brake. Anyone else want to comment on this?

I noticed from the beginning that my brand new TSX has a quiet and smooth-feeling parking brake. To tell you the truth, I'm not sure if it would bother me if it made a ratching noise. What did your dealer tell you about it?

Okay, so at least I know I'm not crazy... My only guess is that the tech used some gorilla grip action and yanked the brake as hard as he could, and somehow that caused the ratchet sound to be louder now? Who knows...

And nope, I never push in the button upon applying the brake.

Anyway, I need to call the dealer later today about another issue, and I'll mention the brake- but if it means bringing the car in so they can look at it, I think I'll pass- it doesn't bother me that much...

My parking brake was also smooth and quiet when it was new, and I've noticed it's gotten a bit louder, and I can feel the racheting more (after 6 weeks). It's still smoother than any car I remember having.

Maybe the sawdust is falling out.

well thats why. Use the button if you dont like the sond. Its normal on most cars. I was suprised its not as noticable on th TSX the couple of times I didn't get the button pushed. Its the lock passing the notches to hold it place thats all.

Yeah, I think almost every car makes that noise (except for some foot p-brakes), so I was suprised as well when I got my TSX that it was un-usually quiet. I guess I just got used to it being that way, so the other day when it was loud (or should I say sounded just like any other car's ratchet) it suprised me a bit. Funny thing is, today it's quiet again- very odd...

Same thing happened to me. Maybe it's temperature related. It had been cold for a few weeks, but recently it's 10-15 degrees warmer.

No matter, the sound level of setting the parking brake isn't an issue to me.

I was told to always push in the button and pull up, then let go when its all the way up, or wherever I want to put it, I guess my parents prob. told me that a long time ago when I was learning to drive, and having always driven standards, its just become a habit. So I reckon I've prob. never herd how loud or quiet my parking break ratcheting is in my RSX because I've prob. never set it w/o pushing in the button...

I reckon you could make it a habit to push the button while applying and then you wont have to worry about the temperature affecting how loud or quiet it is........
