One more reason the SportShifter is Reversed
Recently, I was accelerating in 3rd and my hand was on the shifter. A car pulls out in front of me and I had to get on the brakes hard to prevent an accident. The forward G-Force caused my arm and hand to move forward and the result was an upshift -- when I should have been downshifting. Not only does it not help slow the car down, but when the threat was clear and I needed to accelerate, I was in 4th when I ought to have been in 2nd. Made me feel foolish.

Hmmmm.
Not to start a holy war, but I find it somewhat intuitive (for me), to pull back to downshift.
Whenever I do hard braking, my hand automatically pulls back, causing me to downshift.

I agree. Up=Upshift, Down=Downshift....not really that hard of a concept

but then, when driving manual... (which wut the ss is kinda simulating)
when usually pulling down it's down shift... (of coures it can go other way)
but when launching, the feeling of upshifting by pulling down from 1st
2nd it's cool haha

I think this is a good point here and don't put it paste Honda engineers to think it through to this level of detail ... they always have.

True, but when I slam the brakes, I generally "know" that I'm going to be flung forward. Thus, I use the left hand to push against the steering wheel, and the right pulls back as a result.
Oh well, in any case, it's a matter of taste. I like it the way it is, and other's don't. C'est la vie.

Defenutly agree there, however I find pulling back to downshift great when taking a hard corner

Burning Brakes
As a person who just came from driving a manual transmission for the last 10 yrs, I find the sportshift pattern to be very natural. The reason is, w/o the clutch, to me, it still completley feels like an automatic even in sportshift mode. Since all automatics shift to lower gears by pulling down, it is intuitive for me to pull down to downshift and push up to upshift.

in a 5MT... My other car is a 5MT and that feels just like my 5AT TSX in SS mode.
Either way, I got used to it in a day or so... no biggie/complaint from me.

Any race car with a sequential transmission has pull back for up and push forward for down so my vote is that the SS should be the opposite of what it is.

It took me a little while to get used to the SS. I too found it counterintuitive to upshift pushing forward and downshift pulling back. Even now, if I haven't played with SS in a while, there is a split second of hezitation and I have to think about whether to push or pull the shifter.

So lets imagine Jim was in a MT and he was in fourth gear shall we. He had to brake and shifted in to 3rd. Last time I checked third was up towards the dash JUST LIKE a upshift with the SS, so WTF is the difference.
Either way Jim should have just braked and left the SS where it was since it downshifts on its own anyway.

But my point is, if you MT'ers want to downshift under braking from say 3rd to 2nd, your body is going forward when you still have to force your arm and hand back to get to 2nd gear. Its the same thing as Jim's situation.
He should have just braked and allowed the car to stop and downshift on ts own. MT'ers would have braked and simply depressed the clutch without even touching the shifter anyway.
= what's a clutch for?

The sportshift is not a MT. I used to own a 5-speed Mazda and, if anything, am more comfortable with a MT than an AT. Now, with my 5AT I found the sportshift somewhat clunky to use, but that has nothing to do with the upshift-downshift thing. You just don't have that intuitive sense of when to shift that you have with the manual.

As a manual driver of an Integra since 1991 (it now has 238K miles and still going), I had a difficult time driving in SS mode. My tendancy was to pull down to the higher gear and up to the lower gear much like going between 3rd and 4th. I can't tell you how many times I thought I was switching to 4th to accelerate only to hit 2nd gear and mess me up!!! I avoid the SS altogether now.

We should also keep in mind that most sportshift users probably have been driving automatics for some time.
I have to admit though that I got confused on the way to work and upshifted when I meant to downshift!

just a question.....is the SS computerized? if so cant it be changed in the computer? i would think it would be, cuz whenever i "click" it a few times it doesnt seem to be anything mechanical? someone should check it out

In order to survive in any case, one must learn to adapt.. the shifter is made a certain way.. adapt to it, its not that hard of a concept.. unless one really can't stand to upshift by pushhing forward rather than pulling back.. which personally shouldn't be a big deal.
