NOT a good day at all...

So at about 9:40am today I headed off for work... Walked into the parking garage, and noticed shimmering glass next to my car. I walked quickly up to it and then saw my entire rear passenger windshield on the floor. Looked up and, yep, I had been broken into.

I haven'y fully looked into it yet, but just a quick glance and I noticed only 2 pairs of sunglasses were missing... valued at under 15 for both.

While walking a block to the bus station I also saw 2 other cars broken into... Not a good day for all of us =\

So what should I be doing?
Ive called my parents, filed a claim with the police. My parents just said start looking for a place to repair it since it will cost less than our deductible.

That's really crappy to hear. I hate auto break-ins, they infuriate me. The time, the money, and the emotional toll (albeit small), and for what? A couple of inexpensive sunglasses.

nothing you can do.
file a report with the cops.
take pictures.
your deductable is higher than a rear windshiled replacement?
well if so, you are screwed via insurance.
clean it up and get it fixed.

that's about all you can do.
I keep my deductables very low ($100 and $200) for instances
such as this one. but it's not your policy, so you have so say there.

bummer.

sucks. a friend of mine had his car broken into in front of a friends house a couple months ago. really safe neighborhood and the last place you'd think a break-in would happen. he had his ipod, head unit, and phone jacked. hope your situation wasnt as serious

That's an insanely expensive option for a lot of people. Unless you're filing a claim at least once a year, it's very unlikely to pay for itself. My deductible is $1000. To lower it to $500 costs only a little less than $500 a year. Going lower, the premium starts increasing faster than the decreased deductible. At best I would still be handing money to the insurance company for nothing. And I'm a 30 year old dude with a nearly spotless driving record.

I don't know if you mis-spoke in your post but the OP said it was the rear passenger window. Smashing the windshield would be an ineffective way to get into a car seeing how they're laminated safety glass and all. What's a window cost to replace? Two or three hundred tops I have to imagine.

yah I got a quote for 195 and they're coming at 1pm.

I bet it was in conjunction with this "low cost windshield repair" truck that I see circling the area right now...

That was probably the guy that did it. Just drumming up some business for himself.

Sounds like they were after more. Maybe they got spooked off in the middle of things. Or maybe they just decided it wasn't worth the hassle. What could you really rip out of the car that would be worth anything? Airbags I suppose but I think even stupid criminals know enough not to mess with those unless they know how to do the messin.

I'm pretty sure these were not any pros at auto theft, probably just grab and snatch types. Like I said there were 2 other cars right outside our complex who got broken into too and seems like in the same fashion, quick break grab stuff and go.

Hopefully luke you aren't right... otherwise I might just switch my car for my brothers and drive the old accord now...

That's exactly what I thought at first too. My house and three others in the neighborhood were broken into 2 days after a security system company went door to door trying to scare us all into upgrading our security systems. They never officially pinned the break-ins on that company, but the police said that they were probably connected to that company.

We upgraded our system...but not with that company!

Someone opened my old civic, luckily without breaking anything. Stole all tools, change. Luckily I had an aftermarket stereo with removeable front panel so they didnt touch it. My neighbor had bigger troubles. He had portable GPS, cop detector and Sony PM3 player in his Nissan 300ZX. Poor guy. All and all it cost him around $450. My losses are incompareable. Oh and sorry about TSX.

weird tho... i swear mines is really set up... they stole actually 3 pairs of sunglasses... (btw all were either crushed scratched or just really cheap =p) well they broke the window and took the 3 sunglasses, opened the hood shut off the alarm.

Crazy thing was that everything (beside the broken glass and battery connecting) was put back... things that were opened and searched were put back and the hood was put back too... also that swinging thing (that held my sunglasses) was pushed back and so was everything in the console...

If there are enough complaints to the police about the same thing (ie car brake-ins) in a particular area, they will start watching out and busting people. Its some hope for ya. I hope they get caught because I don't like that kind of behavior at all. So you were right with filing a police report even though they can't do anything right now in your case.

even if they increase security around these parts, I'm pretty sure theyll just hit other area and in a couple months (when the whole incident dies down...) theyll be back to doing this again.

I think around our area since there are so many college kids, and a shoddy part of la jolla, theres going to be another incident

sucks bad =\

I don't think college students are associated with break-ins any more or less than any other randomly selected group of people out there. I've met more people on campuses who are strenuously against crimes than anywhere else.

Anyway, people who regularly do this stuff are probably more likely than not to get caught somewhere else for something similar.

hey 2 nights ago I heard a loud crack noise when I was in my backyard with my friends and i ran into the front yard and I heard a jeep with 8k lights speed off (I think I kno the person). The next afternoon I realized that my passenger rear back seat window is cracked but not fully broken in because the tint is holding it in place. ( This is the smaller WINDOW that doesn't go down ). I was wondering how much it would cost for repair and what to do to this asshole. I rather much get it repaired since it is raining and I dont want the window the shatter when i'm driving. If you have any idea of what I could or should do let me know please thanks. If you think that the window can be left the way it is let me know also because if it won't shatter I can live with it but it looks completely shattered and all thats holding it is the tints I got which seem decently stable.

Have you notified the security of the parking garage to obtain the surveillance video of the area your car was parked?
