Nice way to stop spills on oil filter change

Well, my idea worked...

You see, I hate changing the oil filter on the TSX (even through the passenger wheel well) because of the oil dripping all over. I thought about this while changing the oil in my wife's CR-V...which happens to use a 2.4L engine (wheels turning). I use a nifty little oil deflector from Honda...and this time I took the time to read the label on the side.

"The Oil Filter Drain Defector (VSB02C000023) for 2002 and later 2.0 and 2.4 liter engines is available through Honda Tool & Equipment Program. 1-888-424-6857"

OK...so I decided to try it on the TSX. It was a cramped fit and I had to sit in the wheel well almost to manuver it in. I then observed the end of the deflector would still allow oil to drip/run onto the engine pan, as the end is wider than the opening for the oil plug. So I taped a ziplock baggie onto the end of the deflector and let it rip. It worked really nicely, until I underestimated the residual amount of oil in the filter and without dumping it over the deflector manuvered it out by tilting it...gahhhhhhhh, what a mess! I did still have to wipe the back lip of the sump and the CV boot, but it wasn't very bad at all!

The summary is this...the Honda deflector (got it from HandAAccessories.com, the 2005 CR-V Maintainence section, for $20.00) fits OK, it's not perfect, but is sufficient. If used correctly with a baggie or such on the end (insert oil filter condom joke here...yes it needs a reservoir tip!) and careful removal of the oil filter, you can do it with a minimal mess.

You know, if you purchase the oil pump (you actually suck all the oil out of the dip stick hole instead of through the normal drain), you actually suck all the oil out of the filter, too, so it's not messy.

That's how Mercedes does their oil changes. I know you can buy them online, too, I just have to search for one.

Or you could just use some good ol' fashioned plastic tubing and gravity and suction it out. No need for a expensive device.

I have not changed the oil on my TSX myself yet, but I did it many times on my STi and Prelude. First what I did was loosen the filter, then I took a leak-proof bag (can be purchased at Home Depot or Lowes very cheap.) and placed it around the filter, then keep turning the filter until it comes off and just drop it into the bag with the rest of the oil that came from it, and then just tie it up and dispose of it.

My major mess when I changed my oil was taking off the oil drain bolt. I would get it oil all over my wrench. So what I did with my STi was purchase a Fumoto oil drain valve. Here it is:

http://www.fumotovalve.com/

The ease and quality of this valve can be searched up at either nasioc.com or iwsti.com. You might want to contact them to make you get the correct valve.

I just changed my oil this morning. I had no drip at all until I unscrewed the filter....that's when I had alot of spilled oil. Now that I know how the oil falls, I'll probably use a funnel and direct the oil to my oil catch can

Here's the cheapest solution and it works everytime for me. I use a shop paper towel, 2 large sheets folded. Then I push it in through the oil drain door, parallel to the half shaft, towards the passenger side wheel making a V shape on top of the under tray. When I unscrew the oil filter, it drips down to the shop paper towels and then flows to the drain pan. Ever since I started doing this about 5 oil changes ago, I've yet to drip a single drop of oil on the under tray.
