Need an Oil Change? An excellent, low-cost oil has been found!
Folks,
For those of you guys that are looking for a low-cost, high quality dino that can easily do 5K service intervals, the most underrated oil for this task is actually a new line of oils out by Phillips Conocco, their Hydroclear series.
The Trop Artic and Motorcraft oils incorporate this technology into their oils and have had outstanding UOAs. Yes, this is the same technology used in the excellent, Motorcraft Blend 5w-20 that many people use on the TL forum.
The Trop Artic 5w-30 is avaliable at Walmart for $1.28/qt, and is superior to their more expensive conventional counterparts since it is a synthetic blend, and contains >50% GrpIII basestock.
Here is a VOA of the product:
Phillips Trop Artic 5w-30, API SM/ILSAC GF-4
Testing done by CAT, SOS lab.
Fe, 1ppm
Pb, 2ppm
Sn, 1ppm
Mo, 31ppm (Friction Modifier, Anti-Oxidant)
Mg, 6ppm (Detergent)
Ca, 1521ppm (Detergent, boosts TBN)
P, 586 ppm (Detergent, AW)
Zn, 666pm (Detergent, AW)
Viscosity @ 100C= 10.6cst (solid 30wt)
TBN (spec sheet), ASTM D-2896=7.8
