Navigation Slow-Down?

I have an '04 that I have owned since May '04, and it has 33,XXX miles on it. I have noticed over the past few months that the Nav seems to have slowed down (think like your computer when it needs to be defragged). If you hit a sequence of buttons relatively rapidly, it takes a couple seconds to catch up with you. Also, the beep after every input lags as well. It didn't do this when it was new.

Is there a way to maybe "flash" the memory (not sure if I'm using the right terminology) to clean it out? Could my Soundgate aux-input (ipod and XM) be part of the problem?

Anyone else experienced this?

I have had mine since 7/03 with 50,000 miles and I am noticing some of the same symptoms. Delayed responses but only in calling up screens - the beeps and keypresses are keeping up.

I will have to try to clear my previous destinations and see if this helps.

Quick update: I deleted all of my previous addresses, and that seemed to help a little. Then I was messing around with it one day, and went into the diagnostic screen. I went in a couple submenus, and found a button "Mem Del" or something like that. I pushed it, the Navi did a hard reset. I think this helped, but I'm not sure, as I haven't used it much lately (I'm at home and don't need it there). This might be the way to do it.

Use at your own risk.

Not sure what you mean by this. If you mean previous destinations, then yes. But I wasn't aware there was a way to "store" addresses (other than the Go Home function, and I didn't think to check that.)

You can store personal addresses using the setup screen and access the stored addresses in the menu screen

I've noticed this happening to my navi, too. It's been over a year sicne I got it and about 25K miles. I notice mostly that it tends to lag now when you it tries to calculate new directions. Sometimes, it'll hang there for like 10 seconds before even getting to like 25% complete on the calculation progress bar.

Could it be, like twizta said, that the DVD itself can get dirty inside the unit and start becoming hard to read for the system? I might try ejecting it to see how "dusty" it might be...

I really don't think it's due to dirt. I think the Nav, like any other computer, suffers from a build-up of information in/on its RAM, and needs the old stuff cleared off to make room for new stuff. Part of that is probably clearing the old addresses out of previous/saved addresses, but what I found (the mem clear/delete button) was (i think) what I was originally looking for with this thread, a way to "reflash" or "defrag" or whatever the memory, just like you do with your computer every few months.

I'll let you all know as I use it more if that mem clear helped.

Navi is Windows based, so maybe there is some new super duper satelite based virus going around.

thats true, but when you turn you car on and off, doesnt that clear up RAM? it wont hurt cleaning the dvd though!

Unplugging and replugging your battery should do the same thing, I believe. I'd look through the menu system for the Mem Del function first though.
Dirt has *nothing* to do with a computer's slowdown. If there was a problem reading the DVD, it wouldn't even run and would make some nasty noises.
