You can also get them here...

https://store.alpine-usa.com/Acuradv.../naviorder.php

Same as the dealer price though. $185 plus tax and shipping.

The DVD has to be in the drive at all times. The DVD contains all the map data and points-of-interest and the NAV system accesses it when it needs to. So no, you really can't use it in more than one vehicle unless you take it out of the drive of one car and put it into the others when you use it.

I thought when you put the updated DVD in and started the car it would update the software version. (not maps, POI, ect...) just the menus ect...

Is this true?

The only question that would really solve this problem is knowing if the updated navi dvd can be extracted and copied. If someone who has tried could give a simple yes or no then you can figure the rest out.

^^ I remember reading about attempts to copy the Navi DVD, they all proved unsuccessful. I think there are threads about this in Audio & Video.

No, there was a hardware change between 2005 and 2006. So, 04 / 05 is one version, and 06-08 is another version.

For what its worth, you can copy the nav DVD. I've done it on my stock 2006 disc. I initially reported that it could not be done, as I extracted the disc information and it was pressed with a parallel track path. If there were any kind of copy protection in the navi unit itself, it would have been able to recognize the difference, as consumer burners only burn in opposite track path for dual layer DVDs. I assumed there would be, but it turns out there isn't. If you do a data copy of the disc and write your own image of it, it can be burned and used just as good as an original. The only key is to make a correct copy of the original.

I have my disc in a jewel case in the house, and keep a burned one in the player. If it ever scratches or dies, I can just burn another one.

When you install a new DVD into the Nav drive it usually does a firmware upgrade (the 3 updates I have installed all have), so yes. But you then must keep that DVD in the drive at all times. You can't stick in a new version, do the firmware upgrade and then put the old disc back in.

So does that mean no more disk updates for the 05 navi system?

I am sure there will be NAV DVD updates for the 2004/2005 NAV systems for years to come.

They are still selling model year 2000 NAV system DVD updates after all...

https://store.alpine-usa.com/Acuradv.../naviorder.php

In fact it says the year 2000 model NAV is getting a 2008 update soon.

I expect we will see a 2004/2005 NAV system update very soon. Keep checking the alpine link above.
