Nav almost screwed me up
Nav disappointed me yesterday....
Went to visit bro this weekend, he's 3-hour away.
Nav plotted a perfectly sensible route going there...on return, strangely, it plotted
a totaly different route....to get to the main HWay, so e.g at the star, instead of telling me to turn left and intersection X going back the same way I came from, it told me to turn right.
So I just followed along putting my trust in technology & waiting to be surprised with the gadgets intelligence.....so we drove thru tony suburb neighborhoods...
It was round 6:30 PM, I was driving the kiddies - nephew & niece - when one of them said something to the effect of what Melanie Griffith's character said in "Bonfire of Vanity" ("darling, where are all the white people ??...")
I looked around...and sweet Jesus, I just realized we are we are in the middle of the 'hood --- homeboys shuffling around, highly tinted ricers/cars, cars that I can name, repainted cars, broken junks, rap music wafting in the air, closed stores, overgrow lots and unbearablly "curious" stares....
So there we were...me and the teenagers - 3 Asians....passing thru in a flashy CG TSX
(still have temp plate on the rear window)...so we didn't exactly look like the dare-devil delivery boys from the local Chinese takeout...
so I am like
"what the...! this is frigging unbelivable ! damn computer is taking us SMAKE thru the city !!! why the hell is it doing this shit ??!!!" :sqntfawk:
I was expecting that at any moment one of 'em homeboys would come up & show me his little cannon & wanna "borrow" my TSX for a test-drive....
Then my NYC instinct kicked in & cooled myself down and man I drove on with a focus as if I was in a war zone.....this would be the LAST place you wanna got into some sort of scratch, fender bender that kind of shit.
So I guess the moral of the story is :if the Nav tells ya something you question in your guts or feel weird about...don't just follow along with blind faith like I did"
OTOH, them programmer made the system really quite precise & intelligenty......wish they had the fore-sight or maybe guts (?) to make the system recognize "red zones"

Whoa. That's sooooo weird!!! You might want to contact your dealer and explain the problem. Has this happened to you before???? If this keeps happening you should definitely check it out.

Driver Follows Navigation System Into River
BONN, Germany (Reuters) - A German motorist obediently following the
satellite-guided navigation system of his car drove straight into the
Havel River in eastern Germany, police said Saturday.
He drove his BMW Friday night past a stop sign, down a ferry ramp and
about four meters (12 feet) into the river before stopping. The
57-year-old driver from Hamburg and his passenger were not hurt.
Police said the driver reported he was following the navigation
system, which had evidently failed to note that the road in the town
of Caputh near Potsdam ended at a ferry crossing.
``Normally accidents like this shouldn't happen,'' said police
spokesman Frank Heinichen. ``But that sort of thing can happen when
people rely too much on technology.''

The thing with them Germans and Japanese :japanese: is that EVERYTHING works in their countries....poctuality, precision, order is the national obsession.
Dumb shit don't usually happen in those lands. So the old fart just went along...probably looking for a "Biergarten"

Computers don't discriminate.
You probably made a mistake and chose a different route. It does give you options as far as whether you want fastest, shortest or avoid highway or something to that extent, doesn't it? I know the system in my dad's XLD does.
This is one of the reasons why I skipped out on the navigation system. It's worthless to me. I'm decently good with roads, and I don't need a computer telling me how to get home. Even when I drive my dad's XLD, I still check the routes beforehand to make sure it's the best way to go. Just gotta use some common sense, my friend.
I've driven my new cars through Detroit many times and it's fine. No one is going to pop out in front of you and rob you. Just gotta pay attention and get out of there safely. Remember, they are just as confused as you are; they don't know if you're some merciless Asian hitman, drug lord, or what, driving a brand new TSX through the 'hood.

In your first post, you said:

What else could you mean by "red zones"?
The navi did what it was supposed to do. It got you home. If you didn't like the suggested route you could either a) make a slight turn off course and have the Navi re-route you or b) press DETOUR and have the Navi re-route you.
The Navi guide (ah yes, remember that?) does warn you should always review suggested routings.
I will give you props though for the added drama thrown in the first post.

I find your graphic description amusing and somewhat offensive, for it's solely based upon
your preconceived and blatantly racial stereotypes of others who happen to be less fortunate than you are.
