My rims got jacked!

Hi All-
Just wanted to let you guys know some punks stole my rims off my 2007 TSX in broad daylight.
I got back from work to find my car sitting in the train parking lot ON BLOCKS with the passenger window smashed in. The worst part was watching my beloved Acura being DRAGGED on the ground onto the flatbed. Exhaust, lower suspension, rotors, all bottom trim pieces were completely ruined.![Why Me](https://acurazine.com/forums/images/smilies/whyme.gif)
The cops said there is a spate of these incidents happening all over Nassau county, LI. A TL-S got hit in exactly the same manner last week in Manhasset. For those of you with TL, TSX or RSX on Long Island, watch where you leave your car. The cops think its a related scheme and late model Acuras are being targeted.
I'm watching Ebay for the wheels, so if you see 4 silver A-Spec 5-spoke 17" rims for sale, take a good look. One of mine has about a 2" long curb rash on the lip...
Be careful out there.
Paul

Why was the passenger window smashed? Did you have lock nuts on the rims and the key was inside?
I keep mine inside cause I don't wanna end up with a flat somewhere and not be able to take the wheels off.. I guess I should hide mine somewhere
Really sorry to hear about this though. Must've been an awful sight

Yeah the cops think they smashed the window to look for the wheel key. My glovebox was open, as was the center console and ashtray. I don't keep the key in the car though. Thermos, I would advise just getting AAA. It's not worth the risk leaving the key in there imho. Though, they still managed to get my rims without it?? There must be some black market tool out there...
The worst part definitely was the flatbed though. Just watching the rear suspension and body trim get bent and destroyed as it was dragged onto the flatbed was agony. At least they didn't get my NSX though lol...

OEM locks are a joke.

A lesson for others: Do not keep the key to your wheel locks in the car. Wrap it in a wash cloth, or towel, with heavy rubber bands (like #64, 3.5 x 1/4 inch) to prevent any rattle, and keep it with the spare tire in the trunk. The wheel locks can still be removed, but I know of no way to do so without using a hammer and making a good bit of noise.

sorry to hear that man. that's horrible.
this happened recently by where i live, but it was at a co-op complex adjacent from me. infinity FX parked kind of out of the way by an highway on-ramp. it was sitting on bricks with no wheels. don't really understand why ppl are stealing OEM rims. then again, stealing in general is just retarded. they'll get caught eventually.

There is a reason why i also park closets to a curb when i'm away for long periods of time.
Makes it harder for thieves with a standard jack. Unless the bring a floor jack, but it still makes it really hard to get the 2nd set of rims.
Sorry for you lost, what area in long island are you near?

Actually, OEM locks are pretty decent for this reason. there is no universal key that they can use to easily take off the locks. they have to hammer a socket onto 4 locks. i dont know about you, but if I was trying to steal wheels, I wouldn't feel comfortable taking a hammer to 4 locks.

I am in Port Washignton. The detectives said this sort of thing is really unusual for that area. Similarly unusual is the TL Type S hit in exactly the same way last week in Manhassset. They told me it's happening all over the North Shore. That's why they think there is a crew out there hitting these cars.
The strage part is that the lot is heavily trafficked and surrounded by houses and businesses. The cops estimated it took 15-30 minutes to do the job, which required a floor jack, digging out four large rocks to support the car, pounding the wheel locks with a socket, etc. It was not a quick smash and grab. That no one heard or saw anything has the detectives skeptical... There are a lot of illegals living around there, so they may be reluctant to talk to the police.
Jim-
The cops said if the thieves can't find the key, they typically trash the whole car as "punishment." So, hiding the key or not keeping it in the car can backfire on you... The worst part is, I have to park there to use the train to get to work. Even if I get everything replaced/fixed, what's to stop them from just coming back and doing it again? It's like I'm a captive!

I feel your pain Paul, hope the thieves get what they deserve.
I have a question for you- why was it necessary to DRAG the car on the flatbed knowing that this would cause a lot of damage? Why not leave the car there for a day or two until you find temp. replacement wheels from junkyards (or even buy 3 spare wheels from the dealership)?

It is a commuter train lot, so the car had to be moved immediately. I would rather have waited to throw some wheels on it, but had no choice.
Acura has it now and will repair everything.
David-
I think making them eat all the glass they broke, washed down with lemon juice would be a great remedy.

Wow, that sucks. I think I'd cry if I came out and my car was sitting on blocks.
I have Ronjons on for the summer, soon will be putting my stock wheels back on for winter.
I'm always worried about my headlights, though. Thieves like to jack HIDs and I can't imagine coming out to your car and seeing the headlights gone.

I'm sorry to hear that something bad has happened to a fellow member of the Acura driving community.
At least you get to know that they are probably f***ing themselves up on crack right now. They'll pay when their teeth fall out, they have no appetite, they lose voluntary control of their ocular muscles, and they can't stop shaking.
One more thing: Are you sure they got a hold of you wheel locks? I'm just wondering now if they were able to get them off without the locks. I hope they can't do that. Did they steal your locks?

It sounds like it is time for the parking lot to install some security cameras (on polls) with recording equipment. Even my secure (fenced in) storage facility has security cameras on each row. It seems inexcusable, in our current climate, that a commuter parking lot would not have security cameras.

I bet if there occurs more criminal activity there, the cops will set up some kind of sting. They usually do that when people recurrently complain about frequent break-ins and theft.

Thanks cybereclipse, I saw these too. But, mine were definitely 17's and had the stock Michelin Pilots on them. That curb rash is almost identical though...for future reference. Still, thanks for keeping an eye out!

It does appear that "acurawei" likes to change wheels a lot:

Can anyone tell me where I would find a good source of used wheels; complete with used tires already mounted and balanced?

The police in my area recommend engraving your drivers license number and state abbreviation on a hidden part of the wheel. Police can look up driver license info almost instantly, but not SSNs.
They even loan the engravers for free. Has anyone done this. I have stock rims on my 08, and am wondering where to engrave...
