I've always had at least one car that has an MT, and that is my preference for my main everyday vehicle. I was almost kidding when I stated a while back that an automatic transmission is "an assistive device for the weak and the feeble". In much the same way as a colostomy bag is an assistive device for those who can't shit for themselves, the auto transmission assists those who can't shift for themselves.

So for me the 6MT was a no-brainer. However, I almost never have to deal with bumper to bumper traffic. If I were facing 40 minutes of that shit twice a day, I'm pretty sure I'd opt for the colos- er, auto.

If you grew up/learned to drive on an MT you'll want it, otherwise do like the majority and get the AT.
Only you can determine if the added fun/control of an MT is outweighed by the "incovenience" during rugh hour traffic.

Manual v. Automatic

I'm 47 and wouldn't consider ever driving a car with automatic. The manual xmission on the TSX is crisp, tight and short; very easy to use with no fatigue factor.

Bottom line - if you are on the fence, go with the automatic. A well driven manual xmission requires almost constant re-evaluation; when to upshift, when to downshift, are you pulling enough rpm's to shift up and are your rpm's low enough to downshift. And if you're a real perfectionist, you want to shift smoother than an automatic.

In traffic, it can be cumbersome so you really have to love it. I do.

Well maybe the dude that blew you was big enough to be able to reach over the shifter with some clearance... but your average female's midsection is going to materially interfere with your ability to shift.

That really depends on which stick shift is higher

No sir. Simply reach over her midsection, and shift with a flick-of-the-wrist motion.

The manual on the TSX is less fuel effecient which doesnt make sense to me but whatever.

If you want a manual car your gonna get the manual....NO MATTER WHAT...even 6 hours of bumper to bumper...if you want it you will get it.

Just think of what you want.

I live in Long Beach, not far from you and I agree with JLUKJA, with the traffic in our area the smart thing to get is the AT. I've always driven MT's in the past and am so glad I got the AT this time. If you want to, you can switch to SportShift mode and play around some. Some of the people giving their opinions here don't live in an area that is as congested as ours, so they can't relate to the gridlock we see here everyday. Plus with so much traffic, you won't really be able to enjoy your MT cause you'll rarely have anytime to rev it up.

But since they don't stock stick shifts in the dealerships (at least not in Seattle area), I'm unable to test drive the stick TSX. The auto TSX felt really crappy and powerless compared to the fun to drive stick Legacy GT, which is my only contender right now. Even if the TSX has the best manual transmission, if Acura won't let me try it until I buy it, they are just gonna lose one customer to Subaru.

The stick shift does not give you a turbo boost over automatic. And numerous posts here have pointed out TSX is not the greatest accelerator. Then again, if you want something high torque, maybe G35 is better comparison with the GT.
TSX/AT = fun ride;
TSX/MT =

For the answer to the "efficiency" question, simply look at the spec sheet for final drive ratio. This explains why the MT is much faster in any measured speed tests than AT.

And also why the milage is not better than AT.

Probably because of the final drive / top gear, longer on the AT, but also maybe because the auto's ECU is set to shift at conservative rpms, unless otherwise solicitated.

At least the AT is supposed to be more economic in theory.
