The MDX.
Same reason for buying most Acuras... you get more bang for the buck. Similarly equipped (Navi, DVD, etc), the Lexus is almost $10k more and the MDX has more power (the Lexus does have significantly more torque making it a better tower), more standard features and (IMHO) sharper, more modern-looking styling.

the lexus is a real suv and can go off road and tow with hill descent control and other off road features not available in the mdx.
the mdx is more in the class of the RX.

As for me, I really dig the Infinity FX35. It's the sports car of SUV's. (Or the FX45 is, if you're into the most speed.) I like the MDX better than the Lexus, but I have to agree that they are a different class of vehicle.

These two are not direct competitors...the Lexus RX330 is more of a true competitor for the MDX.
I'm not a fan of Lexus, but I would buy the RX330. If Infiniti could just put a better appointed interior in the FX35, I'd get that instead. Same goes for Acura.

Why in the hell would you pick the lexus?
The only reasons would be the bitchin mark levinson sound system or if you needed a 3rd row or towing..
Other then that the MDX is a way better truck, handles more like a car, has plenty of HP and is nicer at the gas pump

People pick Lexus to "fit in and have a status symbol" car. Well, people here in Chicagoland, you know see Lexus as more expensive and upper class luxury name than Acura. That's why.

I would go for the Lexus or the Infinity. The Lexus is gorgous on the exterior and on the interior. Man that interior is so nice, it makes you want to melt. The leather, the wood, everything is 100% quality.

Well besides the status symbol, the Lexus RX has a much more appealing interior than the MDX. The real wood looks much better than the fake wood in the Acura, the leather is richer. The only negative I can really fault it for is the fake aluminum, but it's nowhere near as bad as in the Infiniti.
As for the Lexus GX...to me, it's just a 4Runner's interior with some wood veneer. You can tell the designers didn't spend as much time making that interior as Lexus-like as possible vs. the RX's interior. I also don't like the huge swing-out rear gate, and it doesn't help that it swings towards the curb because Toyota didn't change it to fit the convenience of American drivers, where we park on the right side of the road. For that money I'd buy a Navigator.

Again, neither of those, Infiniti FX35 or 45, or the BMW X3.

I'd go for the Lexus. Better quality and more power.

As for the off-road argument... anyone who buys a Lexus for off-roading should be beaten about the head with large sticks... that goes for the Porsche Pepper and all the other luxo-utes. Towing, fine. But off-roading? Buy a freakin Jeep or an H1. Have some self-respect!

I agree, I'm not sure why these two were compared, but since they were the choices I compared them... But even if you take the RX330 AWD instead... The RX is about $2-3k more when similarly equipped (Navi, DVD, etc), does not have a 3rd row seat, has less horsepower & torque... and another quirk, the Lexus SUVs come in less colors than the MDX. So yes... More bang for the buck.

Nay, neither. I'm taking my TSX offroader out for some dirt.
Just elevated the car 20 cm higher, fit in 4 offroad tires and an extra one hanging on top of trunk, and installed an air duct all the way up to the roof.
Thinking about entering DaKar Rally next year. What other stuffs should I put on? A brain perhaps.

I agree that this is not an apples-to-oranges comparison.
But the “it’s a truck” argument seems weak.
-At least 90% of SUVs never leave the road.
-The only things I’ve seen a Lexus “truck” tow is overweight passengers. People with stuff to move generally go domestic or down market.
I don’t really dig SUVs but if I HAD to carry a lot of people and/or stuff I’d get a BMW 5-series wagon like this.
-Same space (or more) as an X5
-Better handling
-Less chance of rolling over
-Better mileage
I don’t need AWD or towing capacity or descent control—on ramps are as steep as it gets here.

If Porsche could build Paris-Dakar 959s for just $1,000,000 a copy, converting the TSX into an SUV should make a nice weekend project!

I understand that this is an Acura forum, where Japanese cars will be generally more well liked, but what about an Audi Allroad? Supremely well built, comfortable, packable, lux, attractive, various engines (including the fun Turbo 6 or the uber fast 8)...it would be my choice, unless of course I could spend more and get a Porsche Cayenne, having driven one for a day, its super powerful, hugs the road like a car, and if need be can haul or offroad with the best of 'em! Just some thoughts

The MDX is more of a drirect competitor to the RX330, but between the two given the choice would be more priority based, if you need towing and/or you would actually take it off road then the Lexus is the choice, for a people hauler with light offroad/light boat towing the MDX makes more sense. In the same price range the VW is an excellent choice BUT you give up some reliability.

Thanks for all the input. I understand the MDX and the GX470 aren't in the same class, but I started this thread because my boss and I have been discussing him getting a new SUV. He currently drives an Audi A6 which is being replaced by a Mercedes E500. And he also drives a 2001 Acura MDX which the lease is up on so either he wants a new MDX or a Lexus GX470. His business partner had an MDX and traded it in for the GX470 and he likes the GX much better. I am looking for reasons to keep my boss an Acura customer.
