Low Gas Light

Is it normal for the low gas light to come on at the 1/8 hash mark? All the cars I used to drive used to go all the way to the 'E' before the light came on. I just want to make sure my gauge isn't off. Now I get all paranoid when the light comes on even though is seems like I have an 1/8 gas left. Has anyone driven it all the way to 'E'? So everyone else's light come on around that 1/8 mark? Thanks!

That is completely normal.
On my '05 MT w/Navi, when the light comes on, the trip computer indicates I can still go for another 60 miles.

Yes, it's all normal. I've driven for up to 264km with the gas light on.

Also, remember that the gauge floats a bit. A corner turn can trip it on and by the time you look down to see it, the needle could drift a wee bit more away from "E" than it was at when it tripped.

Although, I thought I never would, I actually miss the little "ding" you used to get when it came on. Sometimes I'll get in the car, forget about my gas level, and when I do actually pay attention to it, it might have been on for quite some time and the needle actually is on "E"...

Are you serious??? I do know that the "low gas light" wasn't that accurate, but I will not be brave enough to drive the car for 264km when the light comes on.

Agreed. My old Grand Prix would ding and automatically switch the trip computer to "estimated fuel range" mode whenever the range dropped to 40 miles. About 15 miles later, the secondary fuel warning light would come on, and then it really meant business. Needless to say, I was always very aware of my remaining fuel level in that car. In my TSX, the little orange light is easy to miss if you're not looking for it.

On my '04 when the light comes on I've got about 4 gal. left. Do like I did if you want to establish a baseline. When the light comes on fill her up 3+ times and minus what you put in from the tank capacity. I figure I've got about 80+ left before she starts sucking air.

I was doing that. I figured the light would come on at around 14 gal. which meant I had 3.1 gal. left. So, at my 26 mpg average, I figured I would drive another 80 mi. before I was almost empty. But, after driving that extra 75 miles I took it to the gas station and put in 15.6 gal before the pump clicked off. So, now I note when the light comes on and don't drive more than 100 miles more. Still, I've yet to put in more than 16 gal of gas.

I don't know about the 05, but the 06 dings when the warning comes on. The MID also displays the low gas warning message, which is impossible to miss or ignore. Thankfully, you can switch away from it.

That's a pretty cool system in that old Pontiac. My Audi flashes a yellow pump sign when I've got about "30 miles" left, but even if I drive it to 0 miles, I still have 2 gallons left. However, at 30 miles left the Audi gives a ridiculously loud PING that happens to be the same warning sound as the engine destroyed warning, so I damn near have a coronary every few weeks or so. I sure won't miss that.

I concluded that my light also came on at 14 gals used. In order to be consistant you do have to keep putting gas in beyond when the first "auto-click-off" thing happens at the pump handle. Of course you could be getting 46.88 mph.
