Launching in 1st and rev limiter
Launching in 1st and rev limiter
Howdy all,
Firstly I'm a big noob on the forums and have spent hours reading through the search results for "rev limit" and other combo's and haven't found a post that really puts my mind at ease.
I've been driving manuals all my life, yet have never had a car that revs as quickly as these TSX's. Sluggish Chev's give you plenty of thinking time, these Acura's wow they can nip you. Anyway I've had my baby for 4900miles now and like to drive it hard at least once a day, up into the Vtec range and occasionally (once or twice a day but not everyday) up into the red range in first and/or second. Well for the past 3 or 4 days when launching hard in first gear I've been getting a bit of wheel spin with VSA off, and today got a really nice albeit unintentional 2second squeel out of the tires. From here I'm busy concentrating on my road position and on four occasions in so many days I've hit the rev limiter
. The first occasion I caught just as it hit, the second I caught as the rev's were dropping, the third I caught as the rev's almost hit the limiter a second time, and todays I was so distracted that I didn't catch them until the rev's were about to hit the limiter a third time
.
I'm not making a habit of driving like this, (it sure seems like it though) and I want to keep my car for another 4 years. In your esteemed opinions do you think these instances, and a few similar ones earlier on in the mileage will have done sufficient harm to my engine and drivetrain to not enable my car to last out the 4 years without expensive repairs needing to be done at some point?
Do you have any advice to offer on how best to avoid the rev limiter bounce in these rev happy cars? (Besides get an auto and never put it in Sports mode lol)
Thanks guys.

Although it's not a great idea to hit the rev-limiter on a regular basis, a couple times won't do any harm. The whole idea of a rev-limiter is to prevent you from doing damage to your engine.
As for tips on how to avoid the rev limiter, I can only say listen to your engine as you watch the tach. After a while you'll know when you're getting close to the rev limiter purely by sound.

Thanks fellas
It's greatly appreciated. A CAI is first on my shopping list, then 18"'s. So do CAI's produce that much more induction sound that you really know when the rev's are about to say "no more thank you sir?" I'll just be much more wary of the engine note, the tacho, and pull the change at around 7000rpm max, until I can confidently let those revs creep closer but not touching the limiter.

I found that with these close gear ratio's there's no need to shift at redline all the time. That'll probably help you avoid that limiter. First gear just loves to rocket up there. I love the shift from second to third though, where I feel the most pull.

Good point Pixel, I might adopt a more sensible driving style by leaving shifting at high RPM for gears other than 1st where the revs climb a little slower. Also I guess as has previously been discussed in other posts on this forum I'll get rid of that kick in the backside lurch that occurs when upshifting from first to second at high rev's. I just love the sound of a singing K24 though and the way it just pulls all the way up to the limiter...it's almost intoxicating.....Oh well I'll have to try to keep that for the 2nd to 3rd shift
Shifting 1st gear to 2nd.
Hello, i'm wondering if that backside pull that you feel when shifting 1st to 2nd in HIGH REV is normal, because this is the first MT car that does that to me!!!! Thank you!!! I want to get rid of that.
