Key options for 06 TSX
Key options for 06 TSX
I got my 2006 TSX over the summer but only have one key that came with it, and have the 06 fob but was very worn down and looks like its from the 90's. I was looking at getting a second key made and was looking at getting a second F.O.B as well. I have seen some threads about the switchblade key, but it seems like it is a hard to do. I wanted to know if anyone knew of any realistic options for a second key, perhaps one that has the F.O.B built into the key. My first choice would be the switchblade key but I don't know how realistic that would be, since I heard you have to find someone that can mill the key a special way.
The switchblade and Accord key seem to be the popular ones. You are correct about the switchblade key, they are a pain. The TL key uses a different type blade that does need to be milled down to the right size. There was a DIY thread somewhere where somebody hacked one of their factory keys and installed it into a switchblade casing, but with only one key, I wouldn't recommend it. From time to time you see somebody doing a sale on them pre milled, but those are few and far between.
The Accord key doesn't require milling, but I seem to remember there being an issue with the immobilizer. Moda_Way will know, hoping he'll chime in here with that info. The switchblade key (from the TL, not the 2G TSX) uses the same type immobilizer, so there's no need to transplant the one from your existing key into it. Just take it to a master locksmith or the dealer and have them program the car to accept it.
Or, you could always hit fleabay and buy some OE keys and fobs and have them cut and programmed. Well, fobs you can do yourself. That takes less than 2 minutes. But that's another option.

So, what I'm guessing the OP meant was, short of hacking his one and only key, is there another option beyond the OE key that doesn't involve having the key milled? At this point, I'm guessing the answer is no. Somebody please chime in if you have any alternatives.
When they're saying milled, they mean the thickness of the blade has to be shaved down. Here's a picture of the TL key I found:

Basically the thickness of the blade needs to be reduced by about the thickness of that flat piece that divides both "sides" of the key or it won't fit into the key hole. No matter what option you go with, even if it's just an OEM TSX key, you will still need to have the key cut to match your car.
Just wanted to make sure that was clear.

PS to all you TSX Switchblade junkies... I think csmeance is planning on another group buy for the milled switchblades... might be nice if those of you who are interested let him know? If I remember correctly, he needs a pretty large number of orders to get it done at a decent cost. He's our hero!
It's really a tradeoff in what you want. The switchblade will likely cost you more, but it is slighty more compact at the expense of being quite a bit thicker in the pocket (and let's face it, it just looks cooler
The Accord key is cheaper and thinner. If you're someone that wants to minimize the size of your key chain and you don't care about the switchblade factor, I'd go with the Accord key. This is coming from someone who actually has the switchblade key! Maybe I'm superficial?

Definetly keeping an eye out for Switchblades. I partook in an auction and my highest bid was $122. It finished at $292. At $150 I refuse to buy it just for coolness factor. But at $100-$120 I'd purchase it with little thought. The one on ebay was done by a place called FBUSA or somthing like that.
I would buy either the Accord key or the Switchblade key. Whichever comes first. Keep us updated, because it looks like there are several people interested in getting keys made,

FYI, OP, the DRIVER2 fob was cheaper than the DRIVER1 fob, IIRC. Hopefully you were given the #1 so that you could save a few $ if you go with the stock key option.
That's really strange. I can't understand why they would be priced differently. Is the key physically different somehow? I have an '04 so the issue doesn't apply to me but I'm still curious as to the reasoning behind that.

I was referring to the key fobs. So far's I know, the keys don't have a "driver1" or "driver2" identification. IIRC "Driver1" is only identified if the vehicle is opened remotely with a fob with memory position link enabled on the fob. (p. 133, 2007 OM)
^That's correct. For the 04/05 you just unlink the memory from the remote and it works fine. And yes, normally the Memory 2 fob is genrally less expensive than the Memory 1, but there's no difference in the fob itself. Either one will work just fine.
