Had my 04 abp 6spd with just shy of 77k on it appraised at carmax. was appraised at $11,000 even if I put the stock suspension back on. Car has no dents or dings. Couple small scratches from the mud flaps. These things around me go for 17grand + with more mileage.
hmm, I feel a bit jipped but i'm def. not going to take the offer.
What you guys thinks?

Appraised by a dealer I'm guessing... just look at the going rates in your area for similar cars. I did a check on edmunds and you should be at least 15-16K for a car in your condition on a trade-in.

yeah, used car dealer.
yeah, the 15-16k price range is what i'm talking about. i've seen almost 100k for over 20 grand. hell, just look at the carmax website. oh well

Carmax gives you wholesale price....I'm trying to sell my saab so I can get a TSX but haven't stopped by there because I don't want to be disappointed when they offer me $4-5k for a car I can sell on my own for $7k. It's always better to sell on your own or use it as a trade-in than to sell directly to carmax.
A friend recently got a toyota 4runner appraised at carmax for $4500 then went and traded it in at a dealer for $6k.

I like carmax if your car is junk already. Traded in my gf's '99 Saab 95 to carmax and they gave us $4800 which was more than kbb price. Car been in a few accidents, A/C and heat dont work, interior smells like crayon, interior falling part.

Go to Consumer Reports and buy their use car buying report ($12-14) for your year car. They'll tell you the trade-in, retail dealer, and retail private sale value. Based on mileage as well as trim.
Forget the Carmax's and user auto lots. Tried having an Acura dealer appraise it for CPO or trade-in?

I havn't tried an acura dealer yet. There is an '05 tsx, black 6spd with 56k on it for $16,5??. Thought about trading up to the '05 plus black tsx's are sexy. But I've put all my time and effort into fixing everything that was wrong with the '04's I don't know if it will be worth starting over. Now if i can find an '05 & up 6spd in either black, white or abp with nav for cheap and less mileage I'd trade.
Now, when I was looking at an '05 STI, they offered me $17000 for my car IF I bought the STI which they were selling for $19,000. Thought, sweet, i've always wanted an sti. So i go check it out......wow, dents, dings, cracked front lip, dirty as fu*k inside and the salesman goes, and i quote "oh yeah, when you hit boost it pulls hard to the right and it was wrecked on the drivers rear but we had that fixed..."
So what you guys think? The more i look around for cars the more i love the TSX. Think it's worth trading up to a newer one? Can't afford an '07 or anything so more along the lines of '05

Yep, local dealers have certified 2004 TSXs for sale: one @ 67,346 miles (asking $24.9K), another @ 41,453 (asking $21.9K). (AutoTrader search, 27705)

Unsolicited tip: ALWAYS negotiate the price of the for-sale car, THEN work on the trade-in.

I too have seen (ridiculous?) prices for used '04s in the mid $20's range and I wonder : OK, I know the dealer is going to ask more than he will get for it, but what are people actually paying for their used '04? Haven't seen anyone on this forum stating what they paid for a used TSX. I wonder...?

Okay, I'm not buying a user car buying report (which will adjust the price based on options, mileage), but CR lists the range of pre-owned 2004 TSXs as "$19,420 - $22,425." Yes, $25K for one with 67,000 miles on it is wacky. Unless they throw in an extended "wrap" warranty (7 years from date of service, 100,000 miles) for free. Even then ... not much of a bargain. Should be able to find a 2006 with some original warranty left on it for that price.
jwood_06TSX, I got an 06 for under $25,000, but it had 34,000 miles on it, not 00,031. Um ... there's something you're not telling us, I suspect....

Based on past threads I think the realistic price for an '04 is around $18k. I see a Certified Pre-Owned '04 with 39,452 miles being pitched at $25,995 at Acura of Bellevue. No shit.

Welcome to the dealership game people....
Used cars---buy low, sell for as much as humanly possible.
New cars---set buying price, low profit margin, sell for what you can while still moving as many as possible.
Don't get mad at the dealers....they are there to make money just like everyone else. The only way you can come out on top is do like what Jordan did and get a really good deal when you buy the thing in the first place and keep the miles low.

This coming from the same dealership that offered me a 2007 TL-S leftover for $32,800+TTL too, so i think they just cut nice left over deals. They did then turn around and try to sell my 04 for $22.9 and then lowered it to $20.9 and i think it sold for around $20k.

did you go to carmax in Dulles? My experience...CARMAX is running off it's old reputation of giving you a fair price. Now they are horrible and have become notorious for low-balling. About 6 yrs ago I took my wifes car to the dealer and then carmax. Carmax gave me approx 2 grand more than the dealer. Last year I went back to carmax to buy a new car and they gave me a ridiculous price quote just like the one you got. I actually got 3 grand more from the dealer. Carmax is not good anymore at all in my opinion.

Mine was appraised at 15K. 43,000 miles, one ding, and three penny size round scratches on my rear bumper. I did just get an e-mail from the dealer saying they want my car and will give me a free appraisal, but I know it's just a gimmick. Needless to say, looks like I'll be keeping my car.

What did you expect? Carmax has to buy low and sell high, they have to make a profit. If it's a POS and you can unload it on Carmax then thats a great deal. Last year they offered me $10k for my 2001 Audi A4. It was a POS. I took it to Pohanka Acura and traded it for my 06 TSX. They gave me a bit more then Carmax. The Audi needed about 5k of work. I ate $6500 to dump the Audi.
