iSimple Install Question
iSimple Install Question
I got the iSimple IPOD integration for my 2004 TSX Nav, even though it says it doesnt work with Navigation and only supports 2005-2008...people here said that it does work it just will not display the text, which i am fine with. my question is do i need to remove the center console to hook this up?? i have been trying for an hour to pull the tabs out and no luck!!! am i wasting my time or do i have to get under the console?? any tips would be helpful!!
thanks!
thanks!
iSimple install
Here are the steps for a 2005/non-Navi install. I spent a bit of time probing around behind the radio but it turns out the connector you need to reach is just above the storage bin. You do not have to dis-assemble the console to install the iSimple.
(1)Remove the storage bin just below the climate control. There are other threads describing detail but basically open the door and pull gently but forcefully straight out. There are no screws holding this bin.
(2)wrap the loose bin (with light harness attached) in towels to prevent damage and carefully set aside.
(3)look at the iSimple unit. It has a large wiring harness with a 14-pin male and female connector. Plug the male connector into the female connector. And then notice that to unplug them, you have to press a small tab to release a lock. Note how this works carefully because you need to press the tab in the next step.
(4)Just above where the bin used to be is a 14-pin connector - it's a bit right of center - but it's directly above where the bin sits. You will need to unplug it. Remember you must press that little locking tab to get it out - the tab is on the side of the connector nearest to you. It's in kind of an awkward position so you may have to work at it.
(5)take the just unplugged connector and plug it into the female matching connector from the iSimple unit. Make sure it's seated firmly.
(6)plug the male connector from the iSimple unit into the place where you removed the connector in step 4. Make sure it's seated firmly.
(5) Connect the Ipod connector per Isimple instructions. There are 2 connectors in the Isimple unit that look the same but the instructions say to use the one furthest from the dip switches.
(6)You're done! except for re-assembly. I would test the unit before putting it all back together.
(7)I have decided to drill a hole in the back of the storage bin (large enough to pass the smaller Ipod connector). But you may have some other preference - like route the Ipod wire the the armrest compartment or glove box. Your choice.
I have found the unit works pefectly. AM/FM/XM/CD changer all work as usual. The display is a bit short for some information but you have seen that with XM information. The steering wheel buttons work as expected.

Thanks CivicKidd.
A couple of extra points about the installation,
I have found that space inside the console for storing the Isimple unit is scarce. The best place I found is on the left side of the console with the Isimple vertically oriented. This would place it inside the console near the driver's knee.
I would also suggest securing the Ipod cable/connector into the Isimple with a bit of hot melt glue. That connector doesn't have a lock and it would be annoying if it worked loose.

Just curious what versions you guys have installed? I'm seeing a couple of models and wanted to make sure I get the right one.
There's
iSimple adapter Peripheral PXAMG PGHHD1 (ebay)
and
iSimple - Apple® iPod® Direct Connect Kit for Select Vehicles
Model: ISIM71 | SKU: 8760904 (best buy)
TIA

The box has PXAMG on it. But I also see ISIM71 on a sticker on the box indicating this is the model for Acura/Honda/Lexus/Scion/Toyota. My guess is these are different numbers for the same unit. I purchased mine at Best Buy.
I got mine at Best Buy also.
Install was relatively painless. The hardest parts were getting up the courage to pull out the console (worried about snapping tabs-it was no problem) and getting my hand in place to release the wiring harness from the headunit.
I routed my cable into the glove box through available spaces.
I love the functionality and the display. The only thing I don't like is that there is no way to set the charge like I could on the Dension unit I had in my old VW Golf. It had three settings- always on, on with car, or it would continue to charge the ipod for an hour after shutting off the car.
Thanks for the concise summary of the directions. It made the install go that much faster.

You don't *have* to drill anything to run the line into the cable box - I didn't... there's plenty of open space to fish the wire through.
For an alternative mounting spot, the panel directly below the glove box comes off (a bunch of clips)... there's a layer of "cushioning" or "insulation" that you can lay the module down on.
