Lightbulb Install cigarette lighter socket in top compartment?

Hi all,

I am looking to install a cigarette lighter in the top compartment (below the stereo on the non-navi TSX). I have a GPS system I have mounted in that compartment, and I would like the charger to be contained within that compartment. I can drill the hole for it, but I want to avoid having to take out my entire console to tap into the cigarette lighter wires.

Anyway, here are my questions.

Can I drill into the top compartment without the danger of hitting anything? Or do I have to take it apart just to make sure...

Can I take the current cigarette lighter out without dismantling the center console? If I can do this, I think I can fish the wires through and make it work...

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Do you really need the cigarette adapter? If you can get another power cord for the GPS unit, I would splice that apart and run the wire to the fuse panel in front of the hood pop on the driver side of the car. You could probably buy one of those mini-fuse adapter things (I forget the technical name) and attach that to the fuse panel in the car. I know there was a thread about this for permanently wiring a radar detector to the car.

If I remember correctly, you should be able to pull out the pocket you are describing simply by pulling firmly on it. You should be able to see if you have the clearance you are looking for.

You will need to remove the lower pocket. Once you do that, you can access the factory cigarette plug. From personal experience, I would recommend leaving it alone, and adding a new one. Because even have the lower pocket out, removing the cigarette plug was a PITA. Additionally, you will have a hole there if you leave it as is.

Good luck.

Alright - I don't smoke for one thing... I should be calling it the 12V power socket! I guess I'm old school or something, whatever.

I could do that, but the power adapter is like 45 bucks, and the power socket is only 8... so I would rather install the power socket (plus I don't need to run the cable through my firewall).

The point is, I don't want the cord to have to be run across my carpet and what not, Since I have my GPS installed in that compartment, I want a plug in the compartment too so I don't have to hide the wires...

Sounds good. I want to leave the stock one alone, I just want to tap into its wires to run the new one. I just wanted to make sure I could get to the wires without pulling the whole console apart.

Thanks man!

Alright, I pulled out the pocket and this is going to work perfectly.

Glad it worked out. I would recommend using a Fuse Tap to get a power source. This won't require cutting/splicing any of the factory wires.
