But this is America, where we are trained to drive 5 miles out of our way to save a gallon.

When I first got my TSX, I was constantly comparing premium vs. regular prices. But now, I just don't even pay attention to the regular prices at all, so I don't feel like I'm spending any more money than anybody else. Of course, it helps thats most of my friends drive cars which need premium, so when gas prices come up we are always talking about premium. I always used to to think they were crazy for buying a car that need premium also

I agree here.
But I do have to compare prices when one station has prices for all 3 grades displayed and the one down the road only has it for regular. I try to justify skipping one for the other based on regular prices. Although that has bit me in the ass a couple times when Shell's 93 is 5-10 cents higher than Exxon's 93.

I was looking into Honda Civic, Toyota Prius, Toyota Camry. Thoes cars are really not my style. But I always wanted to get a Acura TL but I can't afford that with all my other bills. My question is what kind of gas mileage do you get out of a full tank of gas? I drive 40 miles round trip to work and back each day. I would say half of that is Highway. Right now I am putting in about $45 of gas each week in the lumina (87 octane. The Lumina is a POS that leaks oil and engine light is always on so i know it doesn't get good gas mileage. I really want to get the TSX cause I will not be happy in anything else.

Thanks for reading.

I have an '06 automatic that I took home on April 3rd. I have a daily round trip commute of 66 mostly highway miles and it just turned 10k. I usually get 29.2-30.5 mpg by my calculation. The computer's is about 1.5 mpg higher.

Yeah Shell is usualy more $ than Citgo, Speedway ect. I mostly got to Speedway cause of the Speedy rewards points. Plus some of the speedway gas stations have it where you get 2-5 cents off with the speedy reward card. My wife goes on speedway's website and searches for the cheepest gas and goes there if its on the way to work of one the way to where she is going. I actualy yelled and got upset with her about going 15 minuites out of the way to get gas. She burnned more gas and time going way out of the way then she saved a few cents. She doesnt do that anymore. My wife works in Indiana and we live in Illinois. Indiana gas is much cheaper that IL. by as much as $.40 Per Gal sometimes. I have her take my car out there to IN. when I ever need gas so we should be good anyways. Another way we save is by buying $50 gift cards a Speedway. When you buy a $50 gift card you get it for $49 when you use your speedy rewards card. Then when you use it with your SRC you get points on top. So we try to save other ways also. BLAH BLAH BLAH im done.

Dude i get like 300+ miles to the tank depending on how i drive and i dunno how much premium costs there but i just paied 2.81 for premium and filled about 38.00 worth of gas, prolly about 45.00 for a full tank...
and the only difference in price between 87 octane and 93 is about 10 -15 cents a gallon... so thats like 2 bucks extra for premium thats not such a bad price to pay to get the full performance of the car

10 to 15? I wish. It's 20-25 out here. When prices were high it was creeping up to 25 cents, but now that prices have fallen most places are charging a 20 cents difference again.

If they don't display a price for premium on their sign I don't stop. I've found that the gas station w/ the cheapest 87 does not necessarily have the cheapest 93. It's almost like discount stations jack up the 93 to subsidize the 87 to compete.

uh ok first of all, you DON'T have to use premium, although it does help. I ran an extensive experiment for school last year on this topic using the tsx. I only have an average of 5 miles to the gallon more on premium during the highway road tests. I used 87 octane for the other variable in the experiment.

Based on the 5 MPG difference between the regular and preminum gas:
Assume 87 cost $2.70 per gallon, 27 MPG, and 91 cost $2.90 per gallon, 32 MPG;
$20 of regular (7.41 gallon) will give you 185 miles, whereas $20 of premium (6.9 gallons) will give you 206 miles.

185 miles < 206 miles.

Sure, but then he will just be paying the same while traveling shorter distance..., which begs a good explanation for doing so.

Thanks wclark, the MPG difference you collected is a very valuable data.
