A used car... maybe a used accord? or something...
If it has to be a new car... believe it or not maybe a hyundai... 10 year warranty is hard to beat and they have a lot of features in their cars.... even if the car might suck...
or a lancer, sentra, or civic.

I would have to say a used Accord...like around 96 or 97 EX V6 with all the goodies. A buddy of mine got a 97 EX Accord V6 with about 40k on it a while back for 16k...he just totaled it about 3 months after he bought it...

Whoa whoa whoa!! If he's looking for something fast and reliable, he might want to look into a used 1999-2000 Civic Si. A lot of them are just now coming off of leases and are becoming more and more readily available. Electron blue is hot too.
An Accord is an excellent choice. Integra also. That GS-R version was a screamer. A used CR-V if he is into mini-utes also. My dealer has a ton of used 1997-2001 models.
Just don't get a domestic...

It's safe, reliable, and fast (with the turbo).
Can easily be had for +/- $10K.

That's an easy one, because I had to make that decision not too long ago (Dec. 2001). Actually I was thinking 10K, but I soon realized that if we're talking OTD and you want something pretty good, you better stretch it.
I did my "usual" research, and the very clear answer jumped out at me in about 15 minutes. I kept at it a lot longer, but the answer didn't change.
It's the Toyota Echo, hands down. (New.) To my mind, no question about it.
And the year-and-a-half of experience with the car has borne out my impression.

It wasn't for me.
But when I noticed the Echo was more fun than my TL-S, that told me something.

If I was looking to get a brand new car, I would look at the Civic Si. I've heard you can get them around $16K which is over your friend's budget but the extra $1K would most likely be worth it.
If he/she would consider a used car, an Integra or 99-00 Civic Si would be good candidates.

Somebody here also mentioned the Mazda Protege. That's the sleeper. Car magazines have loved that car going back years. I've never driven one, but it's won every comparison test it's ever been in, I think. I know the current one has.
And lastly, I'd consider used. You can find some very low mileage cars coming off leases. The doo-dads don't add as much as you'd think to the resale value, so you can get one loaded for not a lot more than one that is stripped.

Hey! No fair!!!!!!
I gave one that really is under 15K OTD!
Including tax!
BTW -- invoice on the Civic Si is over 17K.
Mazda Protege is a great choice, although for most people it would wind up over on the price.

I'd say the new corolla. Those things catch my eye, and they last forever. I'd probably also look at used accord coupes - I think they look better then the big bubble they've got now.

Burning Brakes
Civic, civic, civic...my friend got a new one (after I talked her into it) and she loves it! We talked the salesman down to 15K for an EX fully loaded. I think that's a deal! Otherwise, I would go with everyone else and say used Accord, Integra, Prelude..anything from the Honda family (or maybe even Toyota). These cars run forever!

Well...if it were my money, I'd be seriously looking into a pre-owned Acura Legend (probably a GS--coupe or sedan). It's going to be reliable, has plenty of power, and a rather luxurious interior.
I'd also think about a used Subaru Legacy GT. It can be had in sedan or wagon form, has AWD and looks really nice, IMHO.
For a new car, I'd say a Civic--it just seems to be the nicest entry car out there (brand new--or used, for that matter).
However, what is your friend's main priority? Does he want a more luxurious car? Performance car? Economy car? Sedan? Coupe? SUV?
Anyway, it would be very wise if he just goes and looks around at dealer lots for a few days--he might find a vehicle he never even thought about before
