i-VTEC in a V-6?

Why hasn't Honda made a V-6 with i-Vtec yet? Mabye they have...I don't know...that's why I'm asking....but it just seems strange that the new TL, for instance, has simply a VTEC motor. While my technical knowledge of how the two systems differ is limited, I'm sure there must be a way to implement it in a V-6.

I'm pretty sure the "i" stands for intelligent......meaning that Honda improved regular VTEC by adding another variable. Someone enlighten us!!!!

the TL is still using the older J-series motors(which btw are VERY awesome motors), which have been out since 97 I believe in the CL's. As opposed to the present TSX, RSX, and Civics which are using the newer K-series motors which have I-Vtec, as opposed to the older B and D series motors. I'm sure the next V6 series motors that Honda comes out with will have I-Vtec or something similar.

Oh well, I guess I should have looked it up rather than guessing out of my ass.

I thought they did. The new Honda Inspire (US accord) uses the new i-Vtec V6 engine that produces 250hp and cruises on 3 cylinders to save gas.

The JDM Inspire does get the i-vtec with its V6 while the Honda Accord sold here in Australia (manufactured in Thailand) only gets the normal vtec. I'm not sure about the Accord in the US though

Honda's current V6's on the market are currently Single Overhead Cam engines while their I4's are DOHC. Right now, i-VTEC only works on DOHC engines. They either haven't spent the money to rework it in order for it to work on SOHC engines or they don't want to overhaul their V6's since North America is about the only place they use 6 cylinder engines in regular use

Here is what I found from www.vtec.net on JDM Inspire...

So....are we expecting next year's TL to have i-Vtec....or is it just the 3.0 liter in the Inspire that can do it? It seems strange to me why they would not offer this new "variable cylinder management" in the new TL.

The US/Canadaian Accord V-6 only gets the regular Vtec as well!

I expected the new RL to boast an i-VTEC V6, but didn't happen, at least not in the concept version.

if the i-vtec really helps improving fuel economy in a V-6, while improving acceleration too, i would be first in line if Honda puts it out in the next gen TSX or in their future cars if the styling is nice.

It just says it was added to the engine which doesn't have i-VTEC. Even still, if i-VTEC is so much better, why does it only add 7 more hp?

Because it smooths out and widens the power band. It's not just peak horsepower (i.e. the bragging number) that's important.

We don't use i-VTEC in engines that aren't 4-bangers. We use them in the K-series engines because it gives these 4-cylinders something they're not used to: a flatter powerband with more low-end torque. We don't use them in V6s because they don't need it (and they can't use it because they have timing belts instead of chains). VTEC engines have SOHC designs on most of our engines now, and the i-VTEC ones have DOHC setups. You have to have a twin-cam engine to utilize i-VTEC. Yes, the "i" stands for intelligent, and i-VTEC = VTEC + VTC (variable timing control). VTC is a system that makes the intake cam constantly variable, producing smoother torque availability.

Exactly what Kurt said. You have to be careful because Honda is also calling their cylinder deactivation system on some v6s 'i-vtec' which has nothing to do with VTC or performance, just mpg improvements.
