I received an offer from Acura for a trade in.......
So I don't own the car, it's my girlfriends, it's an 06 auto completely stock. I'm not sure of the exact specifics, I'm just trying to learn about it now. I personally am a European car guy and have an older audi.
Anyway, a little background, she's owned the car for about 2 or 3 years now and it's in next to perfect condition, she LOVES the car and gets it fully detailed once a month, there's not the slightest click or shuffle in the engine/transmission.
She recently got an offer from Acura for a trade in because they have a customer looking to buy her exact car. She got a loan on the car for about 18k and still owes about 10k on it, they offered her 8k as a trade in and her choice of any car on the lot. She looked into and didn't see anything worth her while, like I said she LOVES her car.
2 or 3 weeks later she gets an offer from them again, this time for 13k as a trade in. If anything she would like to get the 2nd gen tsx, do you guys have any input on the situation? Does it seem like a good trade in? What would you guys do?
Thanks for any input. And any knowledge you can drop on me in any aspect would be much appreciated.

what's the going rate for trade in for the car with those miles?
honestly the dealer is trying to lure you in. it's a common tactic. if your GF loves her car, then why give it up? if she's ready for a newer car then maybe negotiate for a deal.
my dealer contacted me once by phone about my TL...of course they didn't have the correct info on my car since i owned it outright (the lady thought it was a lease and about 3 yrs newer). i bascially told her i had no interest in parting with the car since i love my car and loved NOT having a car payment.
dealers will also send out offers for trade in by mail without hard numbers, just another way to get you to look at something newer with the possibility of "upgrading" and trading.

thats a sales tactic to get you to trade the vehicle, and then agreeing on a new lease or buying a new vehicle.
so, anyway you slice it, you'll lose money.
if she truly wants the 2nd gen tsx, maybe entertain the idea of trading it in with the dealer.

^Yup! My car's fully paid off and I got a letter saying the same. They do that. Don't fall for it unless of course you really want a new car. And if you take the effort to fix your car and treat it right why buy another with questionable history or maintenance or driving style?

My first rule is to never buy from a Stealership. Since the 6MT was impossible to find within 500 miles of me privately, I broke rule #1.
I was hoping that I was enough of a hassle to the dealership that they would leave me alone for good, but I too receive these "offers" to purchase my car.
Buying a car from a dealership is the #1 way to waste money.
Trading in a car to a dealership is the #2 way to waste money.
Getting talked into the "gap protection", undercoating, "free tires" with dealer servicing, is the #3 way to waste money.

Go in WITH HER and WITH A PLAN.
I'd walk in and tell them you will trade the car for 13k. Look for a lease you can take over and refinance, maybe the tsx she wants, AS LONG AS the value is no more than 10k. That way you still owe the same 10k and get 3k in hand for making the compromise.
Chances are they'll see you know what they're doing and not accept or say they have nothing in that criteria. If so LEAVE. But if they can find a tsx for her for 10k then fuck, trade the car for the 13k, pay off the 10k like she was doing and she just made 3k for trading cars.

Based on this what do you suggest for someone in their first year lease, two more years than refinancing to purchase?
If I should buy it, but I shouldn't trade it, what should I do? In your opinion?

Trading in makes sense because you can get a bit of a break with tax on the new car I think.
But yes, OP I would tell your girlfriend that there's no reason to trade up on a car she loves. Maybe if/when she gets bored of it.

Wow, I had no idea that this was a common thing! I've never even heard of this happening before, you crazy Acura lovers lol. Thanks for all the input guys, I guess since she really does love her car and there isn't a reason to get rid of it She should just roll with it...
Now I have to get to to stance it out :-)

I KBBed the same tsx for my area and it says trade in value is around 9.7k in the best of conditions, which dealers rarely go for. 8k is an understandable offer, and still a little on the high side. 13k is flat out jaw dropping and as usdmJon said, if you can make a clean swap and keep her amount owed the same, I think it's foolish not to go for it. As much as she loves the car, she'd get a newer version with less miles and keep trade in value high. Her car will never be worth 13k again. Heck, technically it's not even worth 10. I do understand the attachment however. Do like usdmJon said and have a plan and go test drive a TSX or maybe even an ILX?

Its just a mailer they send out to everyone who's paid off their TSX's. Its a double slap in the face for me, Acura not only sends me junk mail for crappy trade ins, its a trade in for new model line up that has metallic grills on them that looks horrible even after 5 years.
Disregard and toss in the junk mail recycle pile.
