I hit a dog going 75 mph on the freeway
It was a small white maltese, i had no time to swerve and hit it full on with my front bumper and ran over it with both front and rear tires, i heard it squeel i thought the damage would just be my alignment but i stopped to check it and my whole bumper is fuckiing misaligned and cracked on the right side... the grill popped out also... noooo!!!!!!!! now my friends tell me that a cracked bumper cant be repaired and i will have to buy a new one... how much does a brand new OEM painted front bumper cost? and do you think my alignment would be out of whack? the dog was pretty small.... and my car still tracks like it did before

I had a similar impact with a fox about a month ago. I had no time to swirl either, it just ran right under my left front. Ran over it with front and rear tire also. I didn't stop straight away having my 5 year old in the car and figuring the fox couldn't have survived anyway. About 30Km on I stopped for fuel and discovered the whole left side of the bumper had popped out. Front grill was cracked at the bottom, but only because the wind had been pushing the popped out bumper down while driving. Had it mounted correctly again by the dealer and only damage left is the light crack at the bottom of the grill. Good reason to purchase the Mugen grill. Guess I got out of it better then you... Good luck, dude...

I ran over a rabbit years ago... I felt the bump, but it looked it "survived" as I saw it limping back to the woods in the rear view mirror..
The feeling was sickening.

I hit a big ass raccoon going about 75mph in my old firebird way back when....never forget the sound...I swerved and thought I missed it until I heard it hit my right front tire (THHHHWUMP!!!) and saw a spinning corpse flying down the road in my rearview...tore up the cheap rubber underside of the front bumper real good.
Does auto insurance cover you for hitting an animal? My damage wasnt enough to warrant it, but a new bumper certainly is.

A new bumper on my TL in Dec. was $950 thru insurance. I paid the $500 deductible and they picked up the rest. Sure could have found a private shop for less if I had been paying the full thing on my own.
Good luck.

wow...that sucks
I saw a dead chihuahua in the middle of the freeway on my way to LAX from my sister's apt.
And a rabbit ran into the side of my brother's driverside wheel...that was nasty!!

i hit a 2000 lb. black angus bull at 80 mph in my 3000gt. that was an interesting experience to say the least.
even with a hit that hard, my alignment was ok. i took out a giant armadillo with the tsx, and the aligment was fine. my insurance has always covered my various run ins with animals.

(I'm sorry - I'm from New Jersey. The most I've killed is a squirrel)

I missed a few deer, at the cost of my front lip and rims. It sucks when you hit an animal but honestly, I have seen more fatal accidents from people swirving to avoid an animal rather than swirving to avoid other motorists. Don't most insurance companies consider it an "act of God" when you hit an animal? So your premiums don't go up?
Not to threadjack, I feel sorry for your TSX and for the dog, but life goes on.
BTW, anyone ever catch the vid of the jack rabbit that hops across the racetrack (Germany?) and gets hit by the mercedes super car? That rabbit just disintegrates.

Sad, but it's actually good you hit it instead of swerving. Hitting an animal is covered by insurance (act of god), but swerving and crashing is not. I found this out the hard way last winter.

I must say I've been rather lucky myself when it comes to hitting animals. One porcupine back in the 90's, as well as a racccon, and a few randon squirrels here and there (those are just nearly impossible to dodge), as well as a few birds per year, but nothing that would really cause much damage.
The porcupine, I had just injured, so I stopped and tried to kill it to end it's misery. Had I known just a small tap on the nose would have been enough, it would have kept me from trying the hard way to KO it without me collecting some needles.

Apologies in advance to dog owners ...

OK, seriously - I do feel badly about the dog but there's nothing much anyone can do to dodge anything at any speed if it runs out too close to you. I'm more angry about the pet owner who would let that be possible.
Some years back I was driving a 4X4 Suburban on a highway at about 70MPH when a German Shepherd came running across the three lanes. I took it square in the centre of the truck. The dog went UNDER the truck and it's speed took it out the right side between the front and rear wheels. I last saw it headed east off the highway REALLY REALLY fast. I was relieved to see it running.

As tough as this thread is for me, but since u were on the freeway, and not in someones driveway lets say.... not swerving is the safest thing to do... my Friend flipped his year old M3, "saloming" around a Squirl, skidded out on a pile of leaves, maybe going 40 tops, went off into an enbankment and rolled...rolling a M3 at 45mph...no exactly a very flattering end to a car like that

I keep telling you guys he's not evil, just extremly vicious
I hit a rabbit once but didn't run it over just smacked it with my bumper. When I got home and told my parents my dad was furious I hadn't brought it home for dinner

The damage (less your deductible) caused to your vehicle is covered by your insurance if you carry comprehensive coverage on your vehicle.
It is much better for your premium and yourself if you hit the animal vs. swerving and hitting a tree or other fixed object. Premiums rarely if ever increase on comprehensive claims such as hitting an animal, but are likely to increase if you have a single car accident.

It's not really an act of God. We keep those assigned to natural events, not preventable by any human agency, such as flood, storms, or lightning. Forces of nature that no one has control over, and therefore cannot be held accountable.
Hitting an animal is an event that is specific, predictable and definable and is perfect for insurance.
