I had a good idea for a navi improvement

How cool would it be if the next navi update also included a yellow pages type addition so you could look up people addresses and phone numbers. The updated Navi disk would have the updated phone books. I would pay a few bucks extra for something like that.

Pass this to the Acura CEO

I wonder how much space that database would actually take up...

It would be awesome to have though. Unfortunately, I don't think it will happen until our Nav systems are always connected to some sort of network. Then, data will be fed from a server to the car rather than having a permanent disc in the trunk, since such data would change all the time, unlike streets and buildings that don't change all the often.

Your idea would be ideal. But I would settle for a annual update. Phonebooks are not constantly updating either, but they get the job done.

As far as the space it takes up, that is out of my area of knowledge

i think y ou can already do this... theres a feature where you can look up addresses via a phone number in the Menu screen. Is that what you mean?

I was thinking more of a complete white pages directory, with names.

I dont think you will never see the info from the white pages on a navigation. think about it, if that was the case then if you can search by phone number, then you can search by name. and once you have a persons name, then you will have address, phone number, and perfect directions to their house. I would consider that a security issue at your fingertips.

What the difference between that and somebody with a phonebook and mapquest?

yeah i did not think about it that way, but at first thought, a phone book does not always give you city and and it never gives you zip. although easy things to find. but the whole thing about a security issue was something i was told by an alpine rep a few years back when i sold mobile equipment.

you would have to talk to NavTech. they are the company that writes all the nav software for the major brands, including mapquest i think.

You can do it right now with http://www.anywho.com or any of the other online phone books. Look up the person, phone number, whatever, and then get a map. If you're concerned, don't have your address listed with your number.

Problem with this is that a national white pages runs to several DVDs. You can buy them from a variety of sources, but it's a huge amount of data. There would have to be a mechanism to load information from multiple DVDs into a hard drive on the car so it could be searched effectively.

When I go to anywho.com and put in my name and state, I get all of the above back with no problems and there's a button to show a map too. No problem, and available to anybody for free.

Want to avoid this, then don't have your address listed, or don't list your number at all.
