I don't think the HFL understands my southern dialect

Ugh, I have been trying to store some phonebook entries and I do ok up until it asks for the phone number. Ok, I do have a southern accent but dang- it cannot get it right. I have the air turned off, no other sounds coming from the car and I still cannot get it to understand my voice. Has anyone had any similar troubles with having it understand the commands you are giving it?

Try faking a British accent when you say the numbers and see if it works.

This thread is hilarious!

I happen to have a "west coast" accent, but the hfl still has a hard time understanding me at times. When I speak I tend to intonate a lot, which seems to throw it off. It was frustrating because the more the HFL got my numbers wrong, the more I would intonate, and...well you get the picture.

What I started doing was to give the digits in as much a monotone as possible. Think robot. I sound and feel really weird to myself (and thankfully no one else is usually in the car), but so far it's been working.

Yeah it is! Sorry 'yal are hav'n so much trouble!

I agree with OP, I too have trouble with moon roof open or fan turned way up... but my New Mexico accent (read: none) does okay once ambient noise is low.

Makes me want to try other accents. Swedish Chef anyone? Phone-a-book, bork bork bork!

Try not saying "done" before every sentence - like "I done hurt my back...". Instead just say "I hurt my back...". Hahahahaha, I'm just messin' wit ya! No bad intentions. I don't know why you're having those problems. The only thing I can think of is to try coping an Asian accent...

I can say the radio commands without any problems and my wife can do the A/C command with no problems.

I cannot get the A/C to work when I try the A/C voice commands and my wife has problems with the radio voice commands.

We just push the buttons on dash, steering wheel and touch screen now.

We both have southwestern (almost neutral) accents (Colorado/New Mexico/Arizona mix)

Try this:

http://www.gotoquiz.com/what_america...nt_do_you_have

These are my results:

What American accent do you have?
Your Result: The Midland

"You have a Midland accent" is just another way of saying "you don't have an accent." You probably are from the Midland (Pennsylvania, southern Ohio, southern Indiana, southern Illinois, and Missouri) but then for all we know you could be from Florida or Charleston or one of those big southern cities like Atlanta or Dallas. You have a good voice for TV and radio.

I'm from San Francisco and English isn't my first language...

~Cheers~

P.S. Southern accents always seem to have problems with voice-activated systems. Anyone remember the big thing with LA's voice-operated 911?
