Absolutely agree. I drive prius like +60 years old. Now in my TSX, I'm 18 again.

Prius actually has kind of 'luxury': it is super smooth and super quiet. These make me want to sleep. The only interested thing is look at energy/consumption graph and check my MPG and energy flow and remind myself: keep slowly and increase one more MPG,haha

I went through a period where I did all kinds of wierd things to max out MPG. Eventually concluded that many of those things made me a hazzard so I just drove. The challenge of it was fun for a while. When my TSX wears out, I'm hoping there will be a decent all-electric or plug in to consider.

I never understood why they didn't our couldn't make the TSX a hybrid. Woudl have been a fanstastic match.

Yes, this is fine. Without getting into really wierd tactics, the basics of good milage are:

- Accellerate slowly (but don't be a hazard)
- Coast longer when approaching lights
- Drive consistent speeds when you can, keep RPMs low
- If you have an 06+, use the instant mpg display on the MID and train your right foot to use just enough pressure to hold speed but not over do it. It's a short distance between cruising at 20 mpg, 40 and 60.
- Keep the car / tires in shape

I learned alot just watching the instant MPG display on my '06. Now I can get 30 in the city if I pay attention. It always overestimates my MPG, but it's good enough to show me where/when I'm burning the most and least fuel.

Yea cause it's hard to get good fuel eco going down a hill. Try getting that going uphill, both ways like me!

Wow - impressive numbers! By my calculations, my max is just over 33 mpg, and that (1 time!) was actually on 94 octane (available at some stations in canada). My usual average is 28 mpg - mostly highway driving to work, against traffic but with the everyday road hogs. Generally try to keep rpm not too high, not too low, roughly somewhere between 3-4K. Thoughts?

Interestingly enough, higher mpgs seem to be in automatics - is it because I'm just having wayyy too much fun with my little 6-speed???

Davidspalding: you were even getting great mileage while you were taking the picture!

Automatics give better economy because they have higher gear ratios. The top auto gear is higher than the top manual gear so they're turning slower on the highways.

Hint: check my trip odometer..... But it was on a 45 mph road roughly downhill, cruising slowly to avoid stop and go traffic, not intentionally hypermiling. MPG went down the rest of the highway trip from Asheboro to Durham at sustained speeds on rolly polly terrain. It just matters where you measure.

Yesterday I reset Trip B on the highway, and was reading roughly 78 MPG for 3-4 miles.

Try going 612 Miles (930KM) with one tank. That's what I did and posted it here.

Try down-sizing your pics a bit before posting, please. Most people don't have a 1600x1200 display.... (grumble)

Are these average fuel economy snapshots over an entire gas tank? Because...I can reset the trip computer while on the freeway, let off the gas, and make it read 50+ MPG. So, I tend to take these with a grain of salt.

My 06 auto did a little over 34 MPG (calculated at fill up) on a trip from VA to Eastern Long Island that included over a hour of stop and go near the city. I would always get over 30 on any long trip. In normal commuting I would do about 24-25 in the dead of winter (north east winter gas) and 27-28 in the summer with the AC and stereo blasting. My commute is about 25miles on the LIE with a lot of stop and go. The TSX has been the highest mileage car I have owned so far. I just turned it in for an 09 TSX and on the first tank (commuting) I did 24 and change. This take included all the dealer pre-delivery work so I expect the next one to be better. I always calculate and have found that the display can be dead on or high by about 1.5 MPG.

I don’t drive it like a hybrid or a Civic with a fart can.

I believe the AVG MPG display is for the Trip Odometer selected, and can't be customized like the elapsed timer.

If someone posts a pic with AVG SPEED as well, that could be useful. But for these pics, you may see the when you look closely at the trip odometer reading.

Lotsa threads on that topic, there. If you're interested mileage PRINCIPALLY, you could do worse than a TSX.

Search myfueleconomy.gov for comparisons, most of the 2006 TSX' reporting are getting on average 27 MPG.

I just got 33 mpg on my last tank. It was mostly driving around town. That's the highest I've gotten since my 35 on a highway trip last year.

This was a while ago but i got 40.1 just after a fill up, two big hills in between the 21 miles driven before pic taken.

No picture of average speed but i was cruising at 65 the whole ride.

I don't buy most of those pics, show me 40MPG after 400 miles gone. I could snap a picture of 99.9MPG if I wanted to(yes, it maxes out at 99.9MPG, if you reset one while coasting down a hill on a highway).

I get mad at people for driving 35mph in a 40, the oh so sweet spot is right around 40-45mph, in 5th gear, nice low RPMS. On a flat road with a very delicate foot you can burn very little fuel maintaining this speed.

People say driving slower gives you better mileage, well I could show the MPG guage at 33mph and 43mph and show you better MPG at 43mph.

in my experience, cruise control on virtually ALWAYS leads to better gas mileage. it maintains the constant speed much better than a human foot can. too many fluctuations in speed and acceleration when you're maintaining it by foot. over the course of a long distance, it usually makes a significant difference in mileage.

It doesn't take a rocket surgeon to notice the trip odometer reading, I think several of us were joking about that way up above.

I can get better mileage doing the hypermiler tactic of speeding downhill and losing speed on the uphill. CC eliminates that variation. But I'd piss off way more drivers if I was behaving like a tractor trailer rig, gaining and losing speed on the hills of my morning commute. Besides, way too many cell phone drivers here, I'd get rear-ended eventually.

by "normal" do you mean normal for a brooklyn driver? and is your "highway" driving in places like the BQE and LIE? cause they don't count.

I can easily get 34+ on the highway alone. it's the city that pulls me down to a 25ish average, and i don't drive conservatively all the time....

i generally use Sunoco gas. I've been buying 87 as gas prices go back up. (yes - i'm one of those people!). i'd like to report that i rarely see a change in mileage even though i use 87, 89, and 91 (Sunoco sells 91 in jersey).

i average pretty much the same every tank, and when i see a slight difference, i check my tire pressure and add some air back to the tires and i'm back to my normal average.

i know that just blows peoples' minds on this board - that the octane really doesn't matter (except for acceleration power) - but it's true.

and for the record - i've achieved 38 on the highway (all highway) when using cruise control around 65-70mph.

i think that's the point people were making, the TSX runs very efficiently.

Can you imagine if they made this thing a hybrid engine and dropped some of the weight on the vehicle?

it's amazing what we'd be able to do in this country if more people cared about MPG like some of the acurazine posters do!!!

Tire Pressures

For those of you who are getting great mileage, what tire pressure are you running. Standard 32/30? Are you using stock tires?

i know the tactic you're speaking about, but it really only works if you have a steep enough hill followed by a not so steep incline.

if you're on cruise control on the same hill, you'll basically be coasting downhill (sometimes i cancel cruise control downhill to pick up a bit extra speed, then resume it when i hit near the bottom), and you'll maintain speed going uphill. it's less variation that really makes the engine work less and achieve better mileage.

that hypermiling tactic doesn't work in all situations....

i forgot what kind of tires i'm on now, not the stock, but similar to the stock - but i don't follow the standard tire pressure. i do 35 for the front and 32 for the back. you sacrifice some things with the harder tires, but i'm ok with as i'm pretty comfortable with my driving abilities. harder tires will generally get you better gas mileage, but may not grip the road as well.

higher tire pressure will cause the INNER TREADING to wear out faster, vice versa.

Higher psi gives you better gas mileage because the higher the psi, the stiffer the wheel is, therefore LESS contact with the ground. This will give you better rolling distance. Think back to the time when pumped air into a bicycle tire that was semi flat, now remember how the bike rode before and after.

wow I must need a tune up or something cause i just drove a full tank all highway average speed about 70 with a very easy pedle and only got 29.7. I used 93 octane citgo or what ever you get at 7-11 gas. 04 6 speed manual with 69k does not feel like it runs right though I need to get it checked out.

Try doing 58 for 1/2 a tank. I notice that the higher I go above 60, the avg mileage drops a bit. Of course, doing 58 in this car (and not varying much, making people drive around you) is like ordering a nice sushi dinner and washing it down with Schlitz.

Quick Reply: I did 40.1 MPG highway on BONE STOCK TSX 08, take that lexus/infinitis and hybrids.
