Hybrids are cool indeed... my co-worker is on to his 2nd Toyota hybrid. First was the Pryus now it's the Highlander. That's a pretty damn nice small SUV with fuel consumption rate even less than the TSX

DAM BUSH!!! Dam him for making a TSXer make a difficult decision. Making us pay for the war!!!! Even tho he clearly controls the oil now.
Dammit! Why must it be 99cents for regular in Canada per liter. Gas should only go up in America so they can pay for the war. Why must bush make the prices national and hide his obvious scam.

Well, the CA DMV is only going to issue 75,000 permits. There are already 60,000 hybrids registered in CA.

Personally if you're looking to save money that much, buy a much cheaper used civic which already get's 30-40 mpg and toss a SAFC or VAFC on there and gain another 5-10% in MPG.
My old 95 Civic with a type R swap and VAFC got consistent 32-35 MPG. That was with me running it out a LOT too.

Hybrid
--------
15000/50mpg = 300 U.S. gallons.
300 x $2.40 (87 octane) = $720 per year
TSX
15000/25mpg = 600 U.S. gallons.
600 x $2.75 (93 octane) = $1650
$1650 - $720 = $930 per year.
Yes... I own a Civic Hybrid and yes I get 52.3 mpg on average per yer.

Civic Sedan MSRP = $13,260
TSX Sedan MSRP = $27,805
60 payment, 5% interest
Civic Hybrid Monthly = $385.26 * 12 = $4623.12
Civic Sedan Monthly = $259.95 * 12 = $3119.40
TSX Monthly = $524.71 * 12 = $6296.52
Differential of a TSX vs Hybrid Civic in 1 yr = $1673.4 (Hybrid is cheaper)
Differential of a Civic vs Hybrid in 1 yr = $1503.72 (Civic non-Hybrid Savings)
Differential of a TSX vs Civic Sedan in 1 yr = $3177.12 (Civic Sedan savings)
Smoke that!!! If you want to save money, but the lowest model Civic and forget about gas prices. You'll save more by buying a basic Civic with cash in hand for the next 5 years. Tax credits go away.

A civic hybrid is closer to a civic EX (in options) than to a bottom of the line civic. Do some research and you will see that to be true. So redo your calculations.

Ok... last I checked the price per gallon keeps going up. I took an average price per gallon in my $2.70. Where I live it's at 2.75.

BTW, I'm all for hybrids... they have their place for sure.
FYI, my wife's Civic EX can easily get into the mid-30s per gallon and I've had it loaded down on a trip over flat terrain and got 40 mpg. Anyway you look at it, the savings for a Hybrid aren't all they're cracked up to be... good, but not everything and probably not worth the switch.

You probably need to see gas prices in the $3.50 range to see some true hard savings of a hybrid, not just a few pennies here, few pennies there.
I think the Prius gets slightly better mileage than the Civic Hybrid, but costs a few $k more. It has available Navi though. The payoff might come slightly sooner with the Prius.
The biggest fuel savings though come not from better fuel savings but from lifestyle, and social change. Consider that most people in the US commute about 22 Miles per day to work and that probably 50% of your car useage is spent commuting. What if everybody were to live 2 miles closer to work... That's 18% fewer car miles, and translates into direct energy and infrastructure savings. Plus, if you consider that this is just the average and that some people might move to within walking distance of their work you'll have less tangible savings from the health benefits of fatties losing a few pounds.

Here in VA we have the "HOV Restriction" for all hybrids, including the 400H and Escape Hybrid. The hybrid owner must apply for "Clean Fuel" plates from the DMV first. If you drive on I-95 at rush hour, every other car in the HOV lane is a hybrid. They're causing such a back-up that they're actually considering removing the restriction. It's actually why there is such a long wait for hybrids in our area.
