How many miles is normal
So when getting a new car what's the most amount of miles that should be on it. And who is driving those miles? My dealer said sometimes they test it out before they ship and there could be as much as 15 miles on it already.

15 seems a bit high, but not out of reason. Mine had 6 when I picked it up. It might depend on how long it was on the lot, how often it was moved, how far away from the truck it was parked on the docks, etc.

Cars can have a few hundred, or more. For example when I take my cars in for service and my salesman, who has sold me four Acuras now, is on shift he always asks me "what do you want to drive" and I have my choice of any car on the lot. I usually pick a brand new car and it's not unusual for me to put on a couple hundred kilos. Knowing how I drive cars, as well as others I assume, I would never buy a car with any more than say ten or so kilos on the clock.
I also worked as a car jockey, probably a "lot person" now, when I was a kid and know how cars get treated!! I have good stories about how we'd hide keys, go back at night and take cars then use them all weekend before returning them. Guess how we drove them.

Well my car is supposed to go Japan---California---train---truck---KC---phone call---mine. So there better not be any test driving or anything like that. the car is already sold.
I appreciate the feedback. Thanks.

When I PDI the Nissans at my work they usually have 6-9 mi's on the odo. The most I've seen was on a 350z when they first came out, 32 miles , we all had a test drive on that one haha.
But, my TSX had 7 miles when I bought / test drove it. They told me I was the first to drive it, and I believe 'em.

yeah when the ship the cars, its not like they lift them up to bring it somewhere, they have to drive it off teh boat, on the train, off the train on the loading car, to a place on the lot, etc. They add up, Plus, no car will ever come with 0 miles on it i don't think. After they install everything, i believe honda drives it around for a mile or two to make sure eveyrthing is working

Mine had about 220. Was a swap from Northern VT and I live in MA. It made no difference to me - I took it on a long test drive and checked it out top to bottom before I signed. 25,000 miles later the car is rattle and trouble free.

That's why I think all the discussions about synthetic vs dino we see all over the internet are pointless, using the cheapest Walmart oil these cars will outlast most of us.

Typically, a car fresh off the transporter should have no more than 10 miles on it. This should include mileage for a quick shakedown drive by the dealership after prep. Typically, anything over 10 means the car has been driven by at least one other person.
When I get a new car, I always insist that it have nearly no miles on it. My 2004 TSX literally had 2 miles on the odo when I picked it up because the dealer gave me the pleasure of doing the shakedown. My new 2006 had 8 miles on it when I went to take the test drive.

Depends on the dealer. Sometimes the dealers take a particular car and have demos. That way the new ones can have the mileage low on them. Or... sometimes there are either no demos physically or no demos available. In that case they'd grab one off the lot. So sometimes the mileage accumilates from the test drive.
When i first bought my 4runner back in 2000, the car had all of 2 miles on it. That's the lowest i've ever seen it go. I believe most cars are shipped with 2 miles on it. My TSX however was shipped with 35 miles on it since they had to get it from another dealer. The dealer was pretty far away but still within a reasonable drive. So they sent someone else to get it.

I'm glad to read Eeyore's post! Mine had 286 from a dealer swap with another new england dealer for an MDX, the car was allegedly driven not transported via truck. too few miles to have been an abused loaner/demo car, i hope. I know i drove a loaner for about 60 or 70 miles when deciding on the tsx.
The 286 was a little more than i was comfy with, but im glad to see it happens.
I couldnt find any acura dealers in new england that were that many miles from Burlington though...

My '05 had 1.6 miles on it when I test drove it, then bought it. I was told that the truck had dropped it off that Thursday and I bought it on Saturday. He said that they backed it off the truck, pulled it inside to have the windows tinted (this Acura dealer, in TX, tints all of their cars prior to sale), then parked in the back lot.
I Even had to wait after my test drive for them to "prep" it before I could go home with it :-) Oh, and this was not a "planned" purchase, so he wasn't holding it - it was just good timing on my part. He said that they would usually have 4-6 miles on them after a short test drive by the prep department.

I suppose it depends on how one drives.

I know of at least six vehicles which are driven daily that have over 400,000 kilometers on the odo and by coincidence they are all Honda products. My best friend is a dentist and has over 450,000 klms on an Accord.
Usually when you hear of these stories they are always one owner cars and I think that's the secret. If you sell a car with say 200,000 miles chances are some kid will buy it and drive the crap out of it with little or no maintenance hence it won't last long. Both of my kids learned to drive with good running high mileage import cars, their first cars, and just drove them into the ground. With reasonable care those cars would likely still be running.
Sometimes parts supply can enter into it, a friend just scrapped her early eighties Civic with over 350,000 for lack of rear brake parts. Way off topic, sorry.

I think its funny how people get their pants in a twist over 30 or 40 miles on a car.
An important point to make is that every situation is different. Everyone on this board knows that when they went to buy their TSX, there was the magic combination of 3 things that had to be right, transmission type, color (interior and exterior), and Navi/Non-Navi. At the time that I bought my car, the dealer was selling the cars as fast as they were coming in. The car that I decided to buy had just come in on a swap, and was exactly the car I was looking for. The dealer told me that it would have taken at minimum a couple weeks to locate another one that was the same as the one they had just got in from the swap. This could have been stretching the truth, but I took them at their word. I didn't feel like dicking around making tons of phone calls, waiting for the dealer to locate a car, etc, etc.
For those of you who ordered your car, I can completely understand how you would want it to show up at the dealer with almost no miles on it. But for everyone who just goes to the dealer and won't buy a car that is there because it has 20, or 30, or 40 miles on it, I will never understand that.

We cannot store our cars on our lot (our lot is very small because the high cost of land in town) and we keep them about 5-6 miles away. So the cars come from the pier, then go to storage, and then back. If it's never used for a test drive, it will probably have 20-25 miles on it when it sells.

OK:
My car is at it's dealer. I got the VIN. my dealer will send a driver tomorrow (weather permitting) or Monday to pick up the car. so the deal still is not officially final, but i think i'm ok:
It's going to have approx 40 miles on it when delivered but at least i'll have it!
5AT RBP w/Navi
$27,500
Doc Fee: $189
Still undecided on the underbody kit and i want to see what his final price on it is.
so i can finally officially recommend my dealer. If you do decide to go, please contact me for all of the specifics, but it is Springfield Acura in NJ. supposedly someone has already contacted them. Granted, my deal was unique, and i don't think anyone else will get that low of a price, but you might be able to get 28k pre tax price.

Not saying I believe this, but a lot of people do. And when you factor in how many people drive on test drives, you might reasonably conclude that that brand new engine is getting hammered on.

Another view: If you bring YOUR car in for service and the Tech hammers it down the street (while checking out the rattles of course) would you be ok with that? I would think not.
That aside, even if you floored it a few times on tests, are new engines that fragile that it cannot handle that? What are the proven ramifications on that?
I don't know, I guess I'm not the kind of person to abuse things.
